Hey people, I'm a 17 year old male in N.Y. who just discovered this website. I had two fillings put in 2 years ago (December 2005), and developed cholinergic urticaria (I break out into hives whenever my body tries to sweat ex. frp, exercising, sunbathing, etc) about a month after that dentist visit. I only made the connection between my disease (C.U) and the amalgams today after watching a documentary about mercury...

I feel that removal might be the solution to my problem, but I'm not so sure considering how much debate there is on the topic. Can any of you experienced members shed some light on the situation?

Hi Duper, welcome to the forum!

Sorry to hear that you too have become a victim of the toxicity of amalgam mercury. The "hives" you are getting, may well be the mercury rash. As the body heats up (exercise/hot bath, hot weather etc), mercury rises (literally). So similar to mercury in a thermometer! But the reaction on skin can result in an allergic reaction (hives/rashes).

I had this so severely after a DMPS IV injection, which pushed a load of stored metals into the more outer areas, that everytime I heated up, I'd be covered in a hot red rash. Even taking stuff to aid my body's antioxidants (like vitamin C, selenium etc) would also be enough to encourage this further. You may find a simliar reaction yourself when taking anything that encourages toxin release. Selenium can be quite powerful.

However, as bad as the rashes were, it did enable quite a bit of mercury to escape via the pores (this was after amalgam removal). So that was one way my body was trying to eliminate it.

Unfortunately, depending on how long a person has had amalgams, the mercury in them usually becomes tightly bonded inside you. So that even though a person may remove their amalgams, they may still have a lot of stored mercury to get rid of.

After ALL amalgams are replaced, some go through what they call a "dumping stage". The body seems to eventually start to offload some of this storage, once it detects that it is not getting it's daily intake of mercury from amalgams....so it is then free to start dumping it.

This can be a painful and slow process, but is helped greatly by chelation (detox). There are many many ways of chelating mercury and you'll see this on here by people using them.

Two fillings isn't much, but if you are sensitive and are not a good excretor of mercury it can still be a big deal. E.g. in Hal Huggins book "It's all in your head" he mentions a young guy (about your age) who got ONE tiny pit filling and this devasated him. That finished his sport's career, until they removed it and he came right.

So yep, it can happen! Most of us have had much more than two. I've heard some can have over 16 amalgams !! which is deplorable. Why do we get any at all? Mercury does not belong inside the human body and has no place there. THe oral environment is actually the worst. Consider the chewing, hot fluids, heat, saliva etc that is there daily and the vapors coming off those amalgams and this is the most toxic metal known to man. A neurotoxin....um what did they think was going to happen? Is it any wonder it's been banned in certain area/countries around the world! It should never have happened in the first place.

Anyway, sorry for digressing. But it is a good thing you do not have many and have not had them for long. I would DEFINITELY look at having these replaced. But you may want to take this procedure carefully and thoughtfully. It is not just about rushing out and having them yanked out and getting just anything put in, as this can make a person worse in some cases (much worse).

You must find a reputable biologic (holistic) dentist who is going to give you full protection during the removal. Luckily it is just two fillings, so you'd be able to get that done in one session. You may also be wise to find out what dental materials your dentist uses (the names of composites, bonding and lining agents). And possibly get testing done to check if your body is compatible with them.

There are various tests you can do for this. One is the serum test in US. Here is the link to it.
http://www.ccrlab.com./

This is the first thing I would do if I were in your position. Any other testing as well as this might be some extra help to narrow things down further. Finding out which materials turn out favourably on most tests. I cannot say how accurate any of these tests are, it is a very difficult area.

But certainly, you might be wise to do it. Some people don't and simply have whatever the dentist is using, but unfortunately some materials maybe more reactive to you than others. Alternative materials have their issues too, not just amalgams.

You can test for oral reactions by having a small sample of each materials the dentist may use (hardened) and put it into your mouth a few hours a day and see if there is any adverse response.

There are just things you can do if you want to be extra careful, that is up to you.

I would also check up the other posts on this forum by others who are new here and asked questions. This too maybe of help to you:
http://herballure.com/ubbthreads/sh...=5&o=&fpart=1#Post248810

http://herballure.com/ubbthreads/sh...&sb=5&o=&fpart=1

So take your time and read what you can (print them out if you want) and refer to them as needed.

I hope this is helpful to you.

Hello Duper,

I have had Cholinergic urticaria for 6 years - still have it - and I am 21 years old. The hives are a real pain in the censored. It comes every time I exercise, stress, get hot or take a hot bath. In addition to this I have had acne, extreme blushing, concentration problems, mind fog, depression, food sensitivities, heart racing, etc. All symptoms are afflicted with candida and/or mercury. In my case all this probably stems from candida and some mercury exposure too, although I only have had one filling and it probably fell off for a couple of years ago. Many people in my family show traits of what could be caused by missing detox abilities or Hg sensitivity; chemical sensitivites, ADHD, candida, CFS, skin problems. So it is very likely that your two fillings are waay to much for your body to handle when it comes to Hg!

I have started tryout rounds with ALA and DMSA and get reactions (pressure and pulling in my head). In addition to this I cooperate with a MD who has treated and adviced people with issues related to candida and mercury. He told me that he had seen several people being Hg "sensitive" (vague term imo) from their mothers' amalgam fillings who got well after some DMSA.

Do you have other symptoms as well?

Because I have spent so much time researching this and other confusing health issues, I urge you to check out these testimonials from people having slightly the same issues (mercury exposure - skin problems -rashes, etc.)

My sincere advice to you my fellow urticaria sufferer is to remove your fillings and follow a reasonable chelation and detoxification program promoted by this site or the chelation groups at yahoo.com. There's a lot of people with great knowledge concerning illness related to Hg exposure, Amalgam removing and chelation. Good luck!

What is there to think about? Since you have only two mercury fillings, getting them replaced is easy! I had mercury fillings in 24 of my teeth! Getting my mercury filling fillings replaced is a big ordeal. 15 of those fillings were huge. I have already had 12 huge fillings removed. If your fillings are large, and especially if they are in rear teeth, you should consider getting them replaced with porcelain inlays or onlays. They cost much more than composite fillings, but last much longer. For smaller fillings, composites are fine. If you are still eating refined sugar, I suggest that you give it up. Eating candy and chocolate is probably what gave me so many cavities. I eliminated refined sugar over 20 years ago. Also avoid sticky dried fruit such as raisins and dates. Potato chips can lead to cavities, so they also should be avoided. Almost all of my mercury fillings were placed over 20 years ago, when I was between the ages of 5? and 25.

Hi Duper! Welcome to ANSWERVILLE. I have a question. What area of New York State are you in? If you are in the western part of the state, there is a great dentist to go to who uses very safe removal methods and puts in excellent replacement material in your teeth. If you are in Eastern New York State you might want to try http://www.iaomt.org/patients/index.asp
under find a dentist. Hopefully you'll find enough information for mercury problems just by looking through our message board and it also will help you to look back on previous pages of the board. HAPPY HUNTING

Thanks a lot for the responses, everyone. They're all appreciated. I went to family doctor today, and told him about my suspicion of the mercury; but he said he thought it was unlikely. Although he didn't dismiss it completely, he highly doubted it. I'll be doing a blood check and urine check tomorrow to see if anything is abnormal (I have a fear of needles though, haha)

I'm still a newbie to this forum, so I'm unfamiliar with several of these acronyms you guys have been using; but I'll pick it up eventually. I have some concerns holding me back from having the removal done.
1. Ineffectiveness.
2. Potentially feel even worse.
3. Money (although I know this shouldn't be a priority when it comes to health, it definitely matters to some extent). I imagine it won't be too heavy of a burden since it's only two fillings.

I'm worried about the possibility that removal might aggravate my condition. I have read several stories about this happening. If I do the removal, what should I prepare for? How to prepare for it? and how long would it take? I'm currently a very busy student aiming for top universities and I can't really take the chance of getting sick at this time. Maybe in the summer...

Since you have only two amalgams, and you have only had them for around 2 years, there is a good chance that they aren't causing your problems. What if they are though, or if they are contributing to your problems? Perhaps if the amalgams are not removed now, they might cause problems later? Getting them removed will give you peace of mind if nothing else. Make sure that you aren't eating fish high in mercury such as tuna and swordfish.

Hi Duper, you're welcome!

Be aware that mainstream doctors usually do NOT recognise mercury poisoning by amalgams. They only recognise acute mercury toxicity (e.g. from a spill / massive one off inhalation). And the ones that do, are unlikely to deal with it (I have a doctor who actually does believe in it, but hasn't a clue how to really deal with it himself, that's not his area). So I go to a doctor who deals in alternative medicine as well and she does deal in it.

So you really need to get a proper doctor for this, or you will likely wind up wondering why you bothered. The typical urine and blood tests often show NOTHING and even a very toxic person usually winds up having mercury testing show very low levels. This is because mercury is bound up. It does not readily show up on testing unless it is acute. Or the person is excreting it readily and pushing it out well. Those that are normally very ill from it, tend to hang onto it and this is called "retention toxicity".

So be aware of this that once you get the blood and urine testing, the doctor will likely tell you "there isn't an issue". This is typical. Even some of the mercury challenge tests can produce false negatives. It is the way the tests are interpreted and someone highly practised in this and understands it well knows about the "false negatives". Also some people only need a very small amount of mercury to show symptoms, so even if you DID have a bit, you maybe affected by that. It depends on overall immune status, other toxic issues too as to how suseptible you will be to the mercury in the amalgams. It also depends on how well your body excretes it.

Even hair testing is difficult. Again often shows low levels too. The way to do proper testing is best described by Andrew Hall Cutler (chemist). He has written two books and one is called "Amalgam illness, Diagnosis and Treatment", which i would highly recommend. It is available on this very forum (top left in yellow of screen).

If you do the right things as earlier suggested, you should be ok. If you are afraid right now if any aggravation of your condition, it maybe better to wait until Summer. The removal itself would be done in the time you are there. Dentists remove usually 2 or more amalgams in one session.

In the meantime there are things you CAN do to help your body handle the mercury already in you and that is to stick to a good healthy basic diet and avoid sugar, gluten and junkfoods if you can. Taking antioxidants can aid your body and protect it against some of the toxicity. vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, milk thistle, zinc etc. Start of slow and check reactions before taking high doses.

Make sure you have enough protective fats and proteins in your diet like butter, olive oil (in salads if you can), lard, fish oil (mercury free brand). Eggs/meat. Avoid the plant oils like canola oil, soy oil etc.

If/when you are ready to go ahead with removal, here is what somebody said is helpful to this procedure. I cannot vouch for it personally, but here it is:

How to get mercury fillings removed without exposing yourself to toxic mercury vapor
by Mike Adams

Here's a great idea: Let's take one of the most toxic elements on the periodic table and put it in people's mouths. That's exactly what dentists have been doing in the United States for decades, as they've been filling dental cavities with none other than mercury. Of course, they call them "silver" fillings, but they're really a combination of silver and mercury, which is, again, one of the most toxic substances on the periodic table of elements.

I call mercury fillings part of the "dark ages" of modern dentistry. Today, more and more dentists are realizing, "Hey, maybe this highly toxic metal doesn't belong in the human body." At the same time, dental clients are increasingly realizing they need to get that mercury removed, because as you chew and breathe, some of that mercury is being ingested by your digestive tract or inhaled into your lungs. Little by little, those mercury fillings disappear out of your teeth. Where do they go? Right into your body.

So people want to get those mercury fillings removed. There have been some amazing testimonials to the kind of health recoveries people have experienced once they remove mercury from their mouths. Some people have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, for example, and then had their symptoms completely vanish within 30 days of removing all the mercury in their mouth. Mercury is also known to promote Alzheimer's disease, dementia and other nervous system disorders. However, when it comes to removing mercury, too often we're still in the dark ages of modern dentistry, because a lot of dentists don't know how to properly remove mercury from your mouth.

In this article, I'm going to describe how to get mercury removal done right. If you're a dentist reading this, make a note: this is the new standard of mercury removal. And if you're not offering this service to your clients, you should consider adopting it, because people will be increasingly demanding this kind of service down the road.

As a dental customer, the first thing you want to do is find a dentist who will actually agree to remove the mercury from your mouth. Some dentists will look at you with a degree of scorn and say, "Oh, that's hogwash. Mercury is great for you. See, I chew on mercury every single day and I'm fine." So, you've got to find a dentist who's willing to take the mercury out of your mouth. The best thing to do is visit a natural health-oriented dentist if you can find one in your area. I'm fortunate enough to be working with one of the most experienced and well-known natural health dentists in the country. His name is Dr. Steven Swidler, at Medicine Wheel Dental, and let me tell you how he removes mercury from your mouth.

I went in to see Dr. Swidler and told him I had already had all of the mercury removed from my mouth. How did I know that? Because my previous dentist, who I had convinced to remove the mercury, told me he had completed the job. Well, as it turned out, Dr. Swidler looked at my mouth and found there was still quite a bit of mercury in there. Go figure. So, don't assume just because a conventional dentist told you the mercury's gone, that it actually IS gone. You might want to get a second opinion, because I've been walking around with mercury in my mouth for a couple of years, thinking it was gone.

So Dr. Swidler said, "Let's take it out," and on the next visit he proceeded to do so. First he gave me 3,000 mg of vitamin C. This is to boost the antioxidants in your system and help nutritionally protect you from the mercury. Knowing something about chlorella and superfoods, I also took chlorella before that appointment, because chlorella binds with heavy metals and prevents them from being absorbed by your system.

The next thing he did was put oxygen on my nose only, so I could breathe through my nose and get fresh oxygen. Why is this important? Because, when dentists start drilling out the mercury, they're creating mercury vapor, or airborne mercury particles, and you certainly don't want to be inhaling those into the delicate tissues of your lungs. So, you need to get protection by breathing oxygen.

Next, I saw Dr. Swidler and his assistant putting on what appeared to be gas masks. They were actually facemasks that filter out volatile organic compounds and particulate matter. This was to protect them from the mercury. Finally, they stuffed what I’m sure was enough cotton in my mouth to weave an entire pair of jeans. They used constant suction and washing to get the mercury out of my mouth as they were drilling it out. After all of this was done, they had me rinse my mouth out without swallowing, making sure I got any extra mercury out of the way.

After this, I went home and followed it up with a couple of capsules of activated charcoal, because activated charcoal also absorbs heavy metals. So, between my own nutritional strategies and using chlorella and activated charcoal, and the care of my dentist, I was able to get this mercury out of my mouth in the safest way possible. It was replaced with a resin compound that contains no mercury whatsoever. This is the proper way to get mercury removed from your mouth, and if your dentist isn't using a similar technique, then he or she is unnecessarily exposing you to mercury vapor or particles, just as you think you're getting the stuff removed from your mouth.

If you are interested in pursuing mercury removal -- by the way, I strongly recommend you get all the mercury taken out of your mouth as quickly as possible for a variety of health reasons -- make sure you get it done right so you don't expose yourself to mercury vapor or particles during the removal process, or else the removal can be far more toxic than just leaving it in place. However, a good removal will, of course, get this heavy metal out of your body in the safest way possible, without exposing you to dangerous vapor.

As a follow up to this, it's interesting to note there are still many dentists in this country who are putting mercury into people's mouths. I find that absolutely appalling. It's something that should be relegated to the dark ages of modern dentistry. Then again, dentists are also many of the same people who are still promoting the ingestion of a highly toxic chemical called fluorosilicic acid, which is sourced from the waste products of smoke stacks and industrial incinerators. This fluorosilicic acid is mislabeled "fluoride" and then dripped into the water supply based on the advice of half-crazed dentists whose mouths are apparently filled with lots of mercury, because they think they alone have the right to determine whether an entire population should be medicated with a highly toxic substance like fluorosilicic acid.

I've been to meetings where dentists were up-in-arms insisting the entire population, no matter what level of fluoride they might be consuming elsewhere, needed to be medicated with this, and should have no choice whatsoever in the matter. That is, in fact, the current position of the American Dental Association -- once again, another "health" association that seems to have completely lost its mind.

Even if they say fluoride is good for your teeth, it’s not the same stuff dripping into the water supply. Naturally-occurring fluoride is not the stuff obtained by scraping the chemicals off the inside of industrial smoke stacks. That's where they're getting fluorosilicic acid, which is what most municipalities are actually dripping into their water supply. Seriously, if you take a look at modern dentistry, it's a house of horrors. Some of the most ignorant and unscientific procedures of all are practiced in dentistry. A lot of it is just complete quackery, and if you don't visit a naturopathic dentist or a natural health oriented dentist, you are undoubtedly subjecting yourself to some very unhealthy side effects simply from being a patient of modern dentistry.

NB: I personally would not recommend chlorella as a "chelating agent". If you do try this stuff, be careful and check for reactions. The best mercury protocol I used was Andrew Hall Cutler's one.

Thanks again, Bex and everyone else. I find that the more research I do on this stuff, the more hypochondriac (perhaps not the appropriate term to use) I become. I think about how long I've had these fillings and all these symptoms, and I just feel like I have this urge to rip these things out right now...

I think it's become quite clear to me that I have some sort of intolerance for mercury. I've had allergic reactions to contact lens solution, several types of seafoods (I'm not allergic to any other foods, and I think this allergy developed around the same time I first got my Cholinergic Urticaria). Then again, I'm sure there could be other elements that contribute, but right now I'm really convinced these fillings have been the cause of my troubles.

Hopefully, given the relatively short term I've had these, they wont have caused too much damage. Can anyone give me an estimate on how much it'll cost to get two fillings done at a respectable dental place, or how much it cost you guys?

Dental fees vary greatly based on what is done and your location. If you get composite fillings, the cost for two fillings might only be $200-600, so figure on about $300-400 or so average unless you live in high cost of living city, or the fillings are very large. If the fillings are large and on back teeth, you might want to get inlays or onlays even though they are very expensive. Two porcelain inlays or onlays might cost $1,000- 3,500

Update: I have a break from school (a week long) coming up and I plan on getting the dental work done during that time. Both of my fillings are on the molars, and a root canal has been done on one of them (performed the same time when I got the fillings). I have a plethora of symptoms that have appeared since the initial dental work, here are just a few.

Mental: OCD
Inability to sleep at night
Severe depression (not depressed now, but was completely depressed for 6 months after a month the dental work was done)
Terrible short term memory (only recently developed this, memory used to be unbelievably good)

Physical: Cholinergic Urticaria
Muscle weakness (I used to be very athletic, but my muscle are easily fatigued now and weak)
Joint pain
Constantly tired, never wake up to alarm clocks

Anyway, I have discussed the issue with my parents and we're trying to work out what to do. They're thinking having the root canaled tooth pulled (minimize exposure to any more mercury) and replaced (and possibly the other tooth as well.) I'm thinking about going the NYU dental school clinic since the procedures would be very expensive. I don't think I'm going to detox after the procedure considering since I haven't had these fillings for a very long time, but I'll definitely consider your opinions.

Hi, glad to hear things are underway and hope for the best! Just a question, you said you're having the root canal tooth pulled out...and replaced. What do you mean by replaced?

Root canals are so toxic, as to be worse than mercury. So when they pull the root canal tooth, make sure they clear the entire socket and leave NOTHING behind.

Sosick on here had one and got very ill from it, worse than what the amalgams did if I'm right. And she got hers pulled and felt better.

Cavitations are another toxic hazard and again the toxins created from this are worse than mercury according to Hal Huggins. I can believe it, if it's what I have (which is apparently so), then this is a worse suffering than what mercury did to me. They are created after tooth extraction and failure of the bone to grow over the hole left in the jaw. This can be caused by the dentist or oral surgeon failing to remove the periodontal ligament (that once held the tooth) from the jaw and leaving it to stay there. In doing so, because it has no further use, it blocks or hinders healthy healing and bone growth. Another one that can cause this is the use of vaso constrictors in anaesthetics, which restrict blood circulation to the area.

So though it may all sound paranoic, it is all very serious and not something you muck around with. It is not worth a risk to wind up a possible invalid. This has happened to people. So if you get the root canal tooth removed, make sure the dentist clears the entire socket OUT. Don't let them leave a thing there. And request the non vaso constrictor anaesthetic.

It is actually pretty simple, you just need to talk this over with the dentist before they do the job. Be clear on what you want. Be clear that you want every scrap of amalgam out before anything is replaced.

IN reality, you should be going to a biologic dentist because they understand these things. mainstream dentists usually do not. I know the cost is the big issue here, and that makes these things very difficult. If you don't have much choice? I just hope the mainstream dentist is one that listens and complies with your concerns and requests regardless of what she/he thinks of the amalgam or root canal toxicity issue.

Once you get these things out of you, you can still do things to help your body get rid of the toxins left behind. Doesn't necessarily have to be strong chelation either. You can get homeopathic detox kits that aid the body to do this and are very good (Heels is one I used and it works).

Hot baths with epsom salts or sea salt and baking soda (cup each or more). And sweat it out! But don't push yourself to go too hot if you cannot stand it or be there too long if you can't handle it. Just as much as you can tolerate. Toxins escape via the pores.

There's plenty you can do, diet and supplements too. Eliminating bad foods and eating the good and drinking herbal teas (especailly those that support the kidneys. liver etc). Going for walks, rebounding on a mini trampoline. Anything to support your body in elimination. But never overdo it, always go with your body.

anyway, I just hope the dental work turns out well for you and the dentist listens to any concerns.

By replace, I meant with an implant. Although I haven't (and can't) decided since I haven't even seen a dentist for a consultation yet. I will definitely detox the homeopathic way (should've made myself clear =X), but I don't think I'm poisoned to the point where I need to chelate desperately. I have found an IAOMT dentist around my area (Eugenia Rosenthal DDS in case anyone has dealt with her before), and her prices for replacing amalgams are reasonable ($125-275 / tooth). The initial consultation fee is about $200 though, so I'm reluctant to go to her immediately. If I don't feel comfortable with any particular dentist, I will look for another one. I don't want to end up having more work done after this.

Thank you so much for the info on cavitations. I will make sure to bring it up, although I don't think any dentist will appreciate a seventeen year old telling him/her how to do the job<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lisasimpson.jpg" alt="" />. Haha.

ohhhh ok! I hope if you get an implant, it works out ok. They are made with titanium aren't they? I think there is also a newer one made with zirconium too. I'm sure it'll beat having a root canal <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

My Mother has probalby one of the worse case senarios in her own mouth. She has - root canals, nearly every tooth packed full of amalgam (so much so that more amalgam than tooth) and then gold as well. No doubt cavitations on top of that, most people have them following tooth extraction.

Gold mixed with amalgam is horrific apparently, creates a galvanic response (battery effect) and releases even more mercury and makes it more toxic. Then add root canals to the bargain. No wonder she is always unwell, always headaches and gets migraines and can hardly eat anything without having problems with it. Apart from a limited diet.

lol, I know what you mean about "telling a dentist how to do their job". That can come across obnoxious to them I know, but there are ways of doing things so they don't realise what you're up to! no reason why you can't just state concerns and request non vaso constrictor anaesthetic. That is fine, some people have to anyway because they react to certain stuff in anaesthetics too.

I don't think anybody can state they did everything perfectly (maybe the rare few), we're all human (including dentists), so it's not easy. But again, let us know how things go!

It would be good if you came out of this not just "duper" but "super duper" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Bex, I'm beginning to wonder about these dentists. As we discussed before the guy I went to didn't want to use rubber damn or oxygen until we discussed and I got the oxygen. (Next time I may request rubber dam too).

Called another supposed "no mercury" dentist's office and discussed their procedure. They use rubber dam but never use oxygen. I've only spoken to two dentists but after also reading many posts from people on this forum it appears that even these supposed "anti-mercury" dentists in reality don't think it is that toxic or at least don't take the precautions to protect the patients.

So where does that leave us as patients? Are we supposed to run around and interview a dozen dentists until we find one that does everything like Huggins wants? Are we supposed to argue with them in the chair like I had to do until they follow the protocol?

I'm getting very frustrated with all of this particularly since it is the arrogance and stubbornness and greed of the dental community that caused all of our problems in the first place.

Duper, your symptoms are clearly caused by your fillings, especially since they started after getting your fillings. I also have cholinergic urticaria, and it started about one year after I got my filling. The urticaria was very mild, however, so I never got worried about it (this was a mistake). It is probably not caused by mercury directly, however, as this is more a candida related problem. Urticaria is caused by mast cells producing excess histamine, and this is a reaction to foreign proteins, toxins etc. in your body. It is likely a reaction to the candida toxins, and candida die-off (acetaldehyde+foreign proteins). Candida on the other hand is caused by mercury, as it weakens our immune system.

Do not take your symptoms lightly, in the worst case you could end up with lyme disease on top of this all, without even getting bit by a tick (lyme can apparently be spread in other ways too), because of your weakened immunity.

It's too early to say why everyone doesn't seem to get weakened immunity from mercury, but it appears to be related to some genetic defects related to glutathione handling, although there is still a significant individual difference in how much mercury leaks from a filling.

Do not think that you wouldn't need any treatment, because you only have two fillings. It's often not the mercury that is the real problem (after you get your fillings out), and you really need to understand this. It's more about killing the pathogens, like candida. Even the metallic taste you may have is related to candida, and not to mercury.

I have visited various forums that deal with issues from candida to mercury and lyme, so I know what I speak of (in addition to my own experiences).

In the candida forums the greatest mistakes are made. They keep ignoring the mercury fillings, and try to eradicate the candida without removing all their fillings. This is really hopeless - it will not work. Although it has to be said that some with candida have Lyme too, so removing the mercury fillings wouldn't be a final solution either.

On mercury forums it is thought that once you get your fillings removed and chelate your mercury out you should be completely healed. This doesn't work either! You will need to address the candida and other pathogens to get well. The only thing that is vital about mercury is getting your fillings out. The stored mercury tends to be smallish, and it is often a small problem compared to your pathogens. This is so well demonstrated by healthy people (who can have lots of mercury fillings) who also excrete lots of mercury when given a mercury chelator. The mercury chelation protocols still happen to work quite well because many of the mercury chelators targets the candida and their waste products and other pathogens as well (the combo DMSA+ALA particularly well).

On Lyme forums things are done right, because this disease is so serious, that you can't afford to do things wrong - and neither will light methods work. On Lyme forums, removal of amalgam fillings and mercury chelation is thought to be only a part of the treatment, but nobody expects to get well on that alone.

So you still need to go through the candida and possibly other pathogen treatment after removing your fillings. A misunderstanding of your problem leads frequently to mistreatment. The protocol developed by Andy Cutler (ALA+DMSA) can only cure the easiest cases, and even many here need to do parasite cleanses in addition to that to get well.

Thanks for the reply, pgm. I had suspected Candida earlier and performed the self test (spitting into a cup filled with water and seeing the strands almost immediately). But I didn't think that was really an accurate test.

Can you post your history with fillings and Candida and whether you've made progress since starting treatment? Thanks

OK.
Removed ONE filling 11/2006.
Then terrible symptoms as usual lasted for months
started ALA chelation at 8/2007 I think
Then ALA at 20 mg per round / some rounds done. Don't remember how many. Added moly + B5 to clean up the toxins.

Seems like good now - still getting some chelation symptoms, but much better. I believe we are all not only dealing with candida here, but the dreaded Lyme too in some form! I believe it can be beaten though.

Update: Just saw Eugenia Rosenthal DDS today. Very nice lady, follows the removal protocol. It was $160 for a check up with x-rays.

We went over the x-rays and the tooth without the root canal seems to have a cavity under the amalgam, argh. She'll be working on replacing it next week, and hopefully it'll go smoothly. If she finds that the tooth has been too damaged and needs a root canal, argh...

The tooth that has had the root canal done is very interesting. I apparently had a BS dentist last time (unbelievable...). He never completed the root canal, the entire nerve wasn't snipped, only the top. From the x-rays, it looks like there might be an infection (ARGH) under the tooth. Very depressing.

The plan looks like this:
1. Hopefully the tooth without the root canal done is fine and it's a simple replacement ($225). Will be done on the 28th. If the tooth isn't fine, it'll also need to get a root canal. She tested the electricity and decided this tooth should be operated on first.

2. Other tooth, finish the root canal that the incompetent bastard started ($800) and then replace the amalgam ($225)

Obviously, some of you are thinking "WTF? MORE ROOT CANALS?" She was against pulling the tooth and getting something done (bridge?) since it'd be a burden and there's the possibility I'm allergic to the titanium in implants. Apparently, if the tooth gets pulled and nothing replaces it, the other teeth will get distorted.

So give me your thoughts. Good luck, everyone.

Is she a biologic dentist? And can she assure you of the up-to-date best method and most biological way of doing root canals? E.g. (taken from a website) - Conventional root canal therapy is based on mechanical debridement of the canals with antiseptic solutions. The canal(s) are then filled with a rubber based material called gutta-percha and a root canal sealer to try to seal the canal and kill the remaining microbes. Many of these root canal sealers have been proven to be toxic. Furthermore their penetration into the dentinal tubules is limited. After endodontic therapy of infected teeth, microbial infection persist in the root of the tooth and bacterial by-products can continue to access the bloodstream. This is a serious problem as discussed in a recent scientific article published in the International Journal of Endodontics.

Toxins from root canals and cavitations have been found to be worse than that of mercury. The only root canals that are apparently proving a safer bet, are the ones here:

The safer solution for implants, appears to be this latest method here:

http://www.integrativedentalmedicine.com/metalfreeimplantology.html

Whatever way you choose, steer clear of mainstream dentists and go to one who understands the potential toxicity of these dental procedures.

Just a small rant, a bit frustrated.

Dr. Rosenthal's office left a message today @ 9A.M telling me there was a cancellation for 1p.m, but my phone was on silent, ARGH. The irony is that I would've been awake for the call had I had not stayed up late reading more about mercury poisoning. Anyway, I look forward to the 28th.

Just came back from the dental office. Right side of face is still numbed. Haha.

She measured the voltage on my fillings again and found -30 and -24. Last time it was -14, -4, in that order (right molar, left molar). Anyone know why there is such a disparity?

I had my amalgam taken out and there's currently some temporary filling for my nerve to get better (teeth was pretty decayed under amalgam). My next appointment is 3/10, to replace the temporary filling with a composite and possibly start on the other molar as well.

Dr Rosenthal was very professional and I was given chlorella before the procedure began. The removal was quick and easy. There was special suction placed over the tooth the entire time during the removal.

I just wanted to give you guys that update, and I'll let you know if anything new symptoms appear, or if old symptoms begin to disappear.

Just got my second amalgam removed today, and also root canal work done (takes more than one visit). The tooth looked was infected, so now I'm just waiting and we'll see what happens.

Now that I'm amalgam-free, what steps should I be taking to regain my health?

Hi Duper, congratulations. So glad to hear that the amalgams are gone. I hope you'll be ok with the root canals.

If you re-read this thread, suggestions re amalgam chelation have been made with links given. Looking over them and getting a good idea of what tends to be the safest approach for many people.

I used the Andrew Hall Cutler way mostly to chelate myself more safely of stored mercury. Starting with DMSA (available online). Using DMSA for a few months before adding an organ/brain chelating agent (ALA alpha lipoic acid, which should not be used early on until body/blood levels have first been reduced).

An idea of the protocol is just basically starting with a low dose of DMSA, e.g. 12.5 mg (some start as low as 6 mg, some can start with a higher dose). I used 50 mg back then, but in retrospect, I think that was too much. Certainly the more toxic you are, the slower and lower you should go until you can safely increase dose without causing "too" many side effects. The protocol is taking the DMSA every 4 hours around the clock (even through the night, so you'll need to set an alarm). Doing this for approximately 3 days on and then taking a break of 3 days (or more if required) and then repeating this cycle. Some do more days on, it's up to the individual. E.g. 5 days on, 5 days off. Or 5 days on, 7 days off. There is no fast hard rule, except that you should break about as long as you chelated or longer if necessary. And you should chelate longer than 2 days. It should be 3 days or more (up to a week if you wish).

This is the protocol quite a lot of amalgam toxic people tend to try out. It worked for me, works for quite a few people and there are testimonies on here already that I've put up earlier on the sucess of it if you need further confirmation. That is followed for approximately 2 - 4 months, and then ALA is brought onboard. ALA can be taken alone or with DMSA. Some find it better to use with DMSA< because it tends to keep things more stable and can help with side effects.

It's up to you. THere are of course plenty of ways that people may choose to get rid of metals, but for me they were too risky. Some use garlic, cilantro, chlorella, msm etc. For me? They mobilised the metals more than removed them. My body wasn't too good at eliminating what was being stirred up and pulled around. Andy's protocol suited me more in the end.

Diet of course is the foundation of all of this. Without going on a specific healthy diet, I found everything in life far more painful. It just caused me to struggle with candida issues as well as mercury. Sometimes candida can wind up causing more symptoms than the mercury, or you can get confused as to what is doing what. Pathogens V metals. Nasty symptoms.

Supplements are helpful too in many cases. I chose to go with a quality vitamin/mineral complex powder (containing almost everything). Then on top of that, I added vitamin E, selenium, extra vitamin C, milk thistle, zinc magnesium. Iodine can also be helpful because mercury tends to block this and instead takes up residence and causes thyroid issues. Does the same with selenium too. Basically any trace elements are interferred with and competed with and blocked by mercury.

Diet and replacing these elements can actually cause some eruption of metals even without direct powerful chelating agents, so it's best to go easy. Of course, die off from pathogens would come into it too. anytime you rease the ability of your body to assert itself (amalgam removal, better diet and supplements), you will usually find an increase in detox and healing symptoms, so that can be quite difficult at first to deal with.

Hot baths with epsom salts are great, as is baking soda and sea salt (about a cup of each or more). Having it as hot as you can stand (within reason, don't make yourself dizzy!!!). Lying in it up to your chin and staying there as long as you can. If you feel weird, get out of there! Or cool the bath down. I wouldn't take risks <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> Not in that situation. Forcing yourself doesn't work. It should be something that you can tolerate for the most part. If you find all you do is feel sick without being able to stand the heat or sweat properly, this method may not be for you. Or you'll just have to start easy and see how you go.

Exercise is good (moderate, don't overdo it, it can stir up metals). This too helps with eliminating toxins and no doubt some metals too (already accessible metals). Rebounding and/or walking (treadmill outdoors etc) is great.

If you can handle sulfur? Some do very well on it. If you find it stirs metal up too much? Go easy on sulfur foods (eggs, onions, broccoli, garlic, cabbage, etc etc). Check for reactions. I had to watch out for sulfur when I was very metal toxic, because it encouraged metals to move around more. Sure no doubt some came out, but it did feel horrible. So it's best to go easy if you' find it causes too many symptoms.

Avoiding sugar, caffeine, milk, wheat/gluten are pretty essential. These are the main offending culprits to anybody toxic and/or with mercury. Hal Huggins warns agains them and encourages a high proteins (meats and eggs) and high animal fat diet (enough salt should be used also). Check Dr weston Price to confirm the needs for these foods, particularly as Hal Huggins says for mercury toxic people.

Duper, try some supplements, and see what works for you. It's clear that supplements work differently for everyone, and the side-effects they have. So you have to try it out for yourself. E.g. those who have a more serious condition find that B-complex is essential, but I didn't get much benefits, only side-effects in the beginning. See the attachment what worked for me.

Congrats duper. That’s excellent news. Well done for taking control of your own health and your own life. Feels good doesn’t it.

What to do next? Education is vital. The more you know the more informed decisions you be able to make. Read as much as possible. You need to dedicate as much time as possible to learning about detoxing and health. And not just chelation. Other stuff like the cleanses. Kidneys, liver, bowels, digestion. Each of these things will make a significant different to your life. They are easy peasy, the only thing stopping you from doing them is knowledge.

For mercury detox Cutler has a good track record of safety. I am on his protocol.

For the cleanses…this is an excellent place to start learning http://curezone.com/diseases/health.asp

That forum is very good too (except avoid the mercury forums there…its too haphazard.)

Congrats
