Good posting Bex! I'll keep that advice in my mind.
At first I also thought about having my filling removed by an ordinary dentist (I was a newbie then). However, somehow I got the impression that that particular dentist who was supposed to do the removal looked wildly incompetent, she didn't know about the dangers of the mercury fumes and in retrospect she looked rather mercury poisoned herself. The problem with ordinary dentists is not only that they expose you to mercury fumes, but they also tend to leave lots of amalgam behind. A biological dentist cost me 2X more, but I think it was worth it. I also asked that everything should be removed, and the dentist drilled even a bit more into the bottom, before the plastic filling was placed, so I guess not much amalgam was left behind. I spoke to another person today who had one of her amalgam fillings removed and replaced with a plastic, and bad things happened. There was still amalgam under the plastic filling, and in the end, the whole tooth had to go. This is why you definitely do not want an ordinary dentist to do the job!! And yes, you have to get ALL the amalgam out before healing can take place.
