These estimates are higher than the total cost of cardiovascular care or diabetes care in the United States. A major component of these costs is adverse drug reactions (ADEs). In addition, ADEs may account for up to 140,000 deaths annually in the United States."
JAMA 1997, 277(4): 301 I've seen estimates that only 5% of ADEs are reported as such (my Father is such a case and I know personally know of several others). If you run the numbers, it means that 2.8 million are dying each year from Doctor-prescribed drugs making Doctors the leading cause of death in the world today. Hmmmm........
