Now I'm going to ask a question that may have you doubt my intelligence or there lack of...

How are the fish/mercury levels so high?
Is mercury naturally high in the seawater /fish or is it being dumped out there?I have not found anyone who can answer that for me.Thanks.

Just call your local environmental protection dept and they will talk to you about it. I have actually done that in the past. They say they are sure a lot of it comes from coal burning power plants. Mercury is by product of coal. Then of course there's manufacturing which uses heavy metals, and PCB's etc etc etc. People like dentists may play a small role. Even the sewgae with all of our chelated junk which gets recycled out and into the water system again...

In the fish though it's accumulative. The bigger the fish, the worse the problem because big fish eat lots and lots of small fish and acquire the heavy metal burdens of each little fish via ingestion. it is not natural in the water in most places. Oil spills don't help either.

The water is pretty filthy these days just about everywhere you go, fresh or salt water near the coast of any populated area.

Thank you.
I think It would be so interesting to test the mercury levels of Eskimos & other people who eat a large quantity of fish.

The arctic environment is a oot cleaner, less populated so their level may not be all that high. However, you might get some interesting results testing Japanese, chinese or even asian indian fisherman. The Japanese have a very high suicide rate for instance, may be related to lots of sushi.

google 'minemata disease' for some interesting info on mercury poisoning incidents in Japan.

hi sunflower : mercury in the larger bodies of water usually comes from waste from chemical plants and from dumpimg of toxic waste ,and some of the mercury is naturally occuring ,but most is from man , and the safest fish to eat is sardines ,because they have the shortest life span and only absorb a small amount of mercury , and sardines have a higher amount of omega 3 than salmon or mackeral

Also, crematorians. Burning bodies, means the fillings that are contained in the teeth are also burned, releasing a lot of toxins into the environment/water.

Thanks Mikey for the sardine tip! I may try them.

For me, fish falls in to the why-take-the-chance category. I have read up about the different types of fish and the different mercury contents of each. And yes some fish have less mercury than other and I agree with all that research. It is correct.

But……….

But……….i am not a normal person anymore. I am mercury toxic. I can’t handle mercury.

So personally I am not willing to take the risk. I just spent a fortune getting the mercury out. I just had a very difficult last 5 years and the last year has been utter hell because of mercury

So….why would I take the chance that some fish “might” to mercury free?

Seriously what chance do I have being able to tell if it is or it isn’t full of mercury.

Last thing in the world I want to do is take any more chances.

But that’s just my opinion, just my way of thinking and I know it’s just skewed to ultra cautious at the moment

I'm inclined to take the same stance. The idea of some fish being better than others, or "safe" is a bit the same way as what they told us about amalgams. That it's such an "insignificant' amount, it is not a worry. Well I'm beginning to wonder the same about fish.

I like fish, but I am also a little fearful that I will ingest more mercury, even if it's not at levels that the "experts" feel is a problem (as with amalgam).

Like that doctor said in US, there are no exceptions, no fish. Any patients that argue and say "well what about this or that" she simply says "read my lips. NO FISH". She said even in the best apparently clean areas, the so-called low mercury fish are still a problem, particularly to patients already toxic and wishing to heal from their amalgam poisoning.

I believe that continuing to eat fish, might interfere with teh body's wish to detox it's storage of mercury, if it is still ingesting it from elsewhere, however "insignifcant" the amount might apparently be......I dont know if I would put my trust too readily in those that tell us this. Articles or otherwise, like SS, better to avoid, why take the risk?

There are supplements out there certified free from mercury, tested, molecullary distilled etc that would be a far safer way to get the omega 3.
