Russ I'm SO glad that you posted this information. I have been reading Dr. Nicholson's research and investigating Mycoplasma since last Spring. I have been wanting to post an update on my progress for some time but have just not felt well and was also still in the information gathering/diagnoses mode. I hope to have more answers within the next month regarding diagnoses but:
I tested positive for Chronic Mycoplasma Pneumonia last May. This was something I had to demand to be tested for. When the numbers came back they were sky high. I began preliminary treatment (Doxycline and also Cat's Claw) and felt worse and little improvement. Finally after a few attempts with different antibiotics, I was given Zithromax and had to take a six week course of it. A difficult thing to do for someone who also suffers with yeast overgrowth. Also, some antibiotics (not sure whether it's all of them) can block the excretion of mercury and if a person is severely mercury toxic the treatment can be difficult. Nevertheless, I began to feel encouraging and significant improvement. Everything in my body felt like it was trying to normalize. From what I've been able to ascertain, I've been carrying this particular Mycoplasma infection around in an active form for many, many years. I still need more treatment, but am waiting to consult with one more individual.
I have known for a LONG time that there were more pieces to my health care puzzle which had not yet been identified. I kept complaining to my many doctors (sometimes weepily pleading with them) that they hadn't found everything. I finally had to resort to doing my own research -- something I've had to do time and again in order to get real answers. When I took my research in to them and demanded testing I got confirmed diagnoses.
LIke many of the people on this Forum my list of symptoms has been extremely long. The health conditions that have been confirmed so far is also long. My holistic dentist mentioned to me that before chelation is herbally or chemically induced it is really important to try and discover all of the bodies weaknesses and treat existing infection. That's a tall order! Especially given the fact that it is next to impossible to find just one single doctor who would be willing to help test for weaknesses and infections. By weaknesses, I mean vitamin/mineral and nutritional deficiencies, and/or weaknesses in the body's detox pathways, hormonal deficiencies, allergies and sensitivities, etc.
Right now I'm using two doctors and will be adding a third doctor to my "team" next week. I want to rule out Lyme Disease so I'll be seeking the advice of a Lyme Literate Doctor. I'm hoping this doctor will also be able to assist me in boosting my glutathione levels and treating the mycoplasmas with herbs in addition to the antibiotics. Also hoping to bring everything together so-to-speak and just either hit all the infections at once with necessary remedies and make sure anything else hasn't been overlooked.
I 've had a great deal of testing done over the past two years. A great deal. I had boatloads of bloodwork done. And also had testing done with the elite labs for the adrenal, hormone, leaky gut/bowel . . . I've been tested for autoimmune illnesses, etc. Anyway, I've had lots looked at and even after all that, the mycoplasma was not found until I requested it been tested for specifically.
It seems that people who present with the Triad of major infections that I've been diagnosed with so far, all tend to have a problem with Lyme Disease. That "Triad" (well it's really more than three so I guess Triad is the wrong word) is: yeast/candida, epstein barr virus, mycoplasmas, lyme disease. And there are other infections that can accompany these as well that are considered co-infections of the main infection. Anothering interesting factor is that many, many of the people suffering the ramifications of all of these infections seems to be metal toxic to some degree -- usually from mercury.
When all the known existing infections are treated then chelation can begin, if applicable. And that means chelation with the body doing it naturally on it's own, or through some sort of induced formal protocol.
Some of the confirmed diagnoses I've had to far are:
Chronic Epstein Barr Virus (this is gone since removing my 17 amalgams last year -- but I had this debilitating illness for about a decade)
Chronic Mycoplasma Infections
Raynaud's Disease
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (with accompanying bowel bacterial infections)
Leaky Gut Syndrome
Hormonal Disturbances and Deficiencies (low DHEA, low progesterone, high estrogen, low serotonin)
A lot of gynecological problems due to an overwhelmed immune system and endocrine system
Late Stage Adrenal Fatigue (alarmingly low cortisol and low DHEA)
Systemic Candidiasis
Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Sydrome and Fibromyalgia (I don't accept these as diagnoses. I see them as a description of an overburdoned immune system which has gone awry. I've been determine to find the root of the CFIDS and Fibro.
Many allergies/sensitivities
Many nutritional and mineral deficiencies, despite taking high quality professional supplements
And those are just the "confirmed" diagnoses. I won't bother to list all of my symptoms and incapacities.
Mycoplasma Infections are fatiguing illnesses! They can be difficult to diagnose and stubborn and persistent with treatment.
When I look at this list and consider all of the many debilitating symptoms I've had over the years, no wonder I for all intents and purposes became a "non-functioning member of society." I used to criticize myself for being sloth-like. Guess I should have cut myself more slack. Especially when I was at my worst a couple years ago. At that time I still had my toxic teeth. No wonder I've been tired and unable to think clearly or function! Not many people with 17 amalgams, a toxic root canal, an undiagnosed abcessed tooth, systemic candidiasis, chronic epstein barr virus, mycoplasma pneumonia, nearly end-stage adrenal fatigue, an endocrine system experiencing havoc, horrible irritable bowel, etc., would have energy and be able to lead a normal life.
All I can do is shake my head.
Anyway, here are some more links on Mycoplasma in case anyone wants to read more. This is often the culprit in fatiguing illness and it usually overlooked by even the best of doctors. Sometimes the symptoms can be so vague that it's difficult for the patient to even identify them all.
