I'd be curious to hear other people's opinions on SLS and its alleged toxicity levels. I don't know if I buy into the idea that it can lead to cancer, as has been alleged, but that doesn't omit it from the list of potential toxic candidates (even if it doesn't cause cancer it can still cause other problems.) If Wikipedia is anything to go by it sure doesn't speak highly of it - and mind you, SLS is in just about every product known to man!

I've always felt that natural should, surprisingly, be cheaper and healthier. Why should I pay MORE for soap that does NOT have perfumes in it for example? Shouldn't it be less? And why clean your garbage disposal with some heavy duty detergent when you can use lemon rines, for example? Sometimes I mop my floor with vinegar instead of chermicals but I have to be honest, if I want the floor to look half as clean as it will be with some cleaning agent, I have mop it three times very vigorously. Sadly, the chemical products do work better - but not without their consequences perhaps.

So I've read all the theories, both sides and everything in between. What do you folks think about SLS. It's in just about every "natural" product out there you can find. I'm not looking for links and stuff, I'm looking for YOUR opinion. What do you folks think?

I think it a cheap detergent/cleaner. So cheap, that it gets put in everything without thought. Companies that use this gunk in their products obviously :
1) have not done any research into the effect of this crap.
2) don’t care if they harm anyone
3) don’t want my business, which is fine by me.

The reason it is used so much, in so many products, is because it abundant and its cheap. Just like mercury!

I avoid it like the plague.

Hello again, Sunshine

Just curious then, how do you avoid SLS? I don't believe it can cause cancer, as has once been alleged, but I do believe it complicants allergy-sensitive people and therefore wish to eliminate it from my life.

The problem is, what do you wash your hands with? Brush your teeth with? What (alternative) do you use for shampoo? The only solutions I see are either paying exorbitant sums of money for "natural" products, or using old fashion methods like cleaning your teeth with salt water instead of toothpaste, washing your floors with vinegar instead of chemicals, etc.

Thanks for the reply!

Hiya Pwcca

When you said “SLS is in just about every product known to man!” I assume you actually meant “SLS is in just about every product known to THE COMMON man!”

Luckily I am not a common man, I am a Jedi knight, and I now know this gunk for what it is. Gunk!

If you actually go out there and search, you will find whatever you want. If u want mercury free fillings, with a bit of hard work, u can find. Sample applies to fluoride. Same applies to SLS.

If u want SLS free shampoo, toothpaste, bubble bath, shaving foam, soap, aftershave, conditioner, cleansing lotions or whatever….. get off yo lazy arse and find some. Sitting around complaining that “my shops only sells products with SLS” in them is what lazy ignorant common people do.

I only use products without SLS in them. I also try really hard not to use companies that sell products with gunk in them, even if the specific product I want is gunk free. I am not an expert so I have no idea what else they might be slipping in. if these companies are willing to cause harm to half their customers, why should I trust them with my health?

I get most of my toiletries from “Miessence”. Its all organic ingredients, lots of aloe vera. The lemon toothpaste is very good too (although strange at first!). I order them on line, postage cost is peanuts.

Shaving stuff I use “Geo e Trumper” – “west Indian extract of limes skin food” – if u try this, you will never go back to regular aftershave

I research, figure out which company I trust, i.e. no gunk in any of their products, and stick with those companies.

All the products mentioned above cost the same as mid-range regular products for the common man. All of them do a better job. All of them feel nice, smell nicer and have better longer lasting effects. No chemical after taste nor extra effects.

This site will help your research:

I used this book too.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Chemical-Ma...ks&qid=1191526568&sr=8-4

I sat down, read all the ingredients on all my toiletries, compared them to what in the book, then chucked all the products away and started from scratch.

Why do I know about all this $hit? Because in my quest to regain my health I needed to reduce my toxic load and this was one of the things I did.

And don’t get me started on suntan lotions!

Apologies if this comes across a little aggressive but I’m feeling a tad rough tonight.

baking soda and hydrogen pyroxide are cheap and natural and you can brush your teeth and clean with both of them.

Thanks!

Do you actually do this yourself? I'd be curious to hear how long term use of this goes.

The problem with buying "alternative" products is that they almost always cost an arm and a leg (and rarely are free of the very things we're trying to rid from our lifestyles.) So unless someone can point me to a "natural" product that is actually CHEAPER than the standard variety, I need a different solution. I'll give yours a try, snowbird I just gotta surf for a recipe for how to mix the two together properly (and how to apply it to my toothbrush!)

I have been discussing baking soda on curezone recently:
“I am reporting back after trying the “Natural remedies” to remove stains from my teeth, as discussed in a previous post.

I tried Orange peel: “Use the inner white part of an orange peel to rub teeth for a lovely white shine.” – it worked a bit, but what I am looking for is something quicker and faster, & that makes my teeth white! I guess if u used a whole orange and used every bit of orange peel it would do the job, but was too tricky and time consuming and the result of my 5 minute rub was rubbish.

I tried strawberries too.”Crush the strawberries gently and rub the pulp onto your teeth.” – same as the orange peel realty, pathetic. Yes it worked a little bit, but didn’t really do the job for me.

I tried BI-carbonate of soda: Now that was the clear winner by a country mile. Put some on your tooth brush. Brush as per normal. Result is nice shinny white teeth with stains all gone. Quick, simple and it works. Perfect. No need to try any of the suggestions, like lemon-juice nor bay leaves.”

I was then told the following………

“Take care with bi carbonate, some times the particles or crystals are too big and therefore they act like a sand paper wearing away not only superficial stains but enamel as well. I recommend the use of it but not for an all days therapy.”

re “I just gotta surf for a recipe for how to mix the two together properly” – I believe u just dip yr toothbrush in and brush.

Re hydrogen peroxide, think u should checkout which percentage to use first.

It was all a bit complicated so I didn’t try the hydrogen peroxide

you can get all cleaning products, hair, body, toothpaste, etc, all free off this crap from health food shops, which is where i do most of my shopping, its more expensive but worth it, look on the label though, some stuff in health shops still have poisons in them.

Be sure that your mercury fillings are all removed before you try the peroxide; my understanding is that it reacts with the mercury and compounds the problem. After I found that out, I realized that when I was the sickest, I was using a toothpaste that had separate chambers to mix peroxide and baking soda.

Kevin Truedeau says that it causes cancer and to be on the safe side, it is better to avoid it. The Dr Bronner liquid soaps are popular in health food stores and do not contain it. I use a Dr Bronner soap with tea tree oil and hemp oil in it. To help the body get rid of the toxins in products you can do the lemonade diet. See this article on the Lemonade Diet
