Anyone with anemia here? I started taking ferrous sulfate 325mg = 65mg iron today with vitamin c and I already feel less cold and got a boost of energy.
I'm wondering if this might just be the placebo effect, I thought iron took a few months to get back in the system

It is not a good idea to take iron supplements in the form of iron sulfate. It might greatly irritate your stomach or cause constipation. It is also poorly absorbed. Organic(carbon based) forms of iron are much more absobable. Solgar and Blubonnet(and probably others as well) make such gentle iron supplements. Taking the iron with vitamin c will increase absorbtion. It is also a good idea to take the iron together with B12 and folic acid. 65 mg of iron is a large amount to take per day. A better idea is to take 18-25 mg of iron in a more absorbable and gentler form.
It is also a good idea to take vitamin c in the form of Ester C rather than plain acidic vitamin c. Ester C is better absorbed, it keeps the vitamin c in the body longer and provides higher blood concentations of vitamin c, is not acidic, and is a good source of calcium.

Are you sure you are iron deficient? Males who eat meat on a regular basis are not likely to be iron deficient, except perhaps if they don't produce enough stomach acid. Iron overload migh be a problem for men who take in too much iron. Those who rarely eat meat and especially women who rarely eat meat are much more likely to be iron deficient. Males who are anemic are typically more likely to be deficient in vitamin B12 or folic acid than iron.

You can take an iron supplement if you think you need it, just take one that is of the organic(carbon based) gentle variety. I have used ones made by Solgar and Blubonnet with 18-25 mg of iron and did not have a problem with those. I rarely eat meat and my diet is low in iron. Food sources of iron that are vegetarian also tend to be much less absorbable than meat sources.

Too much iron can help cause arterial plaque, pretty quickly, which can then cause strokes because veins and capillaries which feed blood to the brain get clogged.

Yes, excess iron (and also copper) causes oxidative stress which you want to avoid, because it weakens the immune system further.
