Nina, I doubt very very much that flax seed has any connection whatsoever to alpha lipoic acid. The initials just happen to be the same. Andy Cutler highly recommends flax seed oil for mercury toxic people and believe me, he is so big on not using ALA for any purpose other than proper chelation that he would never tell us to use flax oil if it had any connection to alpha lipoic acid. One has absolutely nothing to do with the other.
