I’m a bit concerned about the new fad amongst Christian fundamentalists lately and that is: this blanket statement “I love science.” What do you (you in general – I’m not targeting any one specific poster here) mean when you say that you love science? What parts of science do you love exactly? Really, I want to know. Do you have lots of text books at home which you regularly read?

I love Elizabethan and Jacobean literature myself. Consequently I spend a great deal of my free time reading dramas written by people like William Shakespeare and James Webster. It interests me, I pursue it, I do indeed love it. Are your sentiments about science the same as mine in E&J Lit.? Or are you just saying that because you're afraid that if you don't then people might think you're hypocritical; so that you’re not accused of what early Christianity was guilty of: suppressing knowledge and progress? I ask all of this because it sure seems to me that if you do indeed love science yet want evolution taken out of it (not to mention geology if you want to argue that the Grand Canyon is only a few thousand years old), then there must be an awful lot in just about every modern science book that you disagree with. An awful awful lot. Do you have a science book where you love only certain pages of it but the rest you disagree with? Is there some secret vault of Christian-approved science books that I’m not aware of and that’s what you love?

I know this may sound terribly condescending and I apologize for coming across that way as it’s not my intention. But the statement ‘I love science’ sure does beg the question. What do you love, exactly, about science? It’s okay if you’re really not that big on science, you don’t have to say it just to make your arguments about creationism look stronger.

Please consider, I am not a scientist, I am not an evolutionist - yes I am religious. If you label me as otherwise then you've just made it clear you haven't read my post - responding to a post which you haven't read thoroughly indicates that you're not informed on what you're even arguing against! I'm also not a Wiccan and have no idea how this got started other than oversight. If I read your post and see the word 'Sheva' in it, I don't rush to conclusions and assume that you're a Hindu when you could very well be arguing against it! That would be pretty embarassing, don't you think?

I can't comment on the post. I am interested in science, and I do read much about it when I have time, but it isn't a pursuit of mine. I mostly read its application in the areas that interest me, forensics and creation/evolution.

However, fundamentalist christians who believe that the earth is a few thousand years old are guilty of a gross interpretation error, as nowhere in the bible does it say that the earth is only 6days+ life to 12,000 years old (the range of belief). Man has been here for over 6k, that doesn't leave much time for the dinosaurs etc. Scientifically, the bible contains no errors, and in fact stated some things which were considered errors at the time, have since been proved true (the earth being round, supported by nothing, universe had a beginning etc) Even some of the "miracles" contained in it, people point to as showing how it is a book of stories, however, I saw a show on Discovery channel a couple years back about the parting of the red sea, and they actually demonstrated scientifically, how it could be done. A flood that consumed the whole earth was deemed ridiculous, yet now that we have the knowledge, we can see that this occurence was a high probability.

I love science.

As a kid, I wanted to be a chemist and had a chemistry set. I then wanted to be a geologist and went to rock quarries and attained a nice rock collection. I then wanted to be a botanist and grew mosses, cacti, and exotic plants in my room. Then I became very interested in astronomy and began collecting pictures of galaxies (Hale Observatory was my favorite!) by saving my lunch money and making copies of these pictures in the Rockville (Maryland) library. I learned the names of all U.S. rockets (and a few foreign ones), and most modern military jets. Over time, I accumulated a stack of photocopies (mostly from lunch money) that was several inches thick. I also loved physics and the idea of alternative energy sources and finally electronics, which I ended up getting a degree and license in.

I love science.

Through a course of events in my life, I eventually started studying the Bible. I was a little put off at first because this guy Christ seemed to be a little arrogant to me. But as I studied on (I try hard not to let my emotions get in the way of my research) I found that Christ had a strong case and plenty of evidence to make the claims that He did. In fact, I found so much evidence supporting the Bible that I was astounded that more people didn't see what I was seeing.

Through my involvement with politics and working closely with the author of the book "Cheque Mate: The Game of Princes" (I have a signed galley copy) I discovered that most people don't want the truth and don't care about evidence. Mainstream only really wants comfort, pleasure, escape, pride, and sitcoms and none of these lead to truth.

Now, after becoming studied in a few subjects relating to history, law, the Bible, certain sciences, and other related subjects, I have learned an important truth about people, and this is that people are basically selfish and want what they want regardless of the consequences to others.

This saddened me to learn this, and as a natural-born skeptic, it took a long time for me to accept, as did the BIble. But perseverance is one of my strong points (I am a survivor) and now I understand how the world works and where it is going.

Through all of this information collecting and collating, I learned many things, including an interesting thing that I came across around 1990. I learned that our (U.S.) money would eventually turn orange (There will eventually be 3 primary currency colors in the world).

I received some ridicule about this claim for quite a few years. Now that it is happening, it's not funny anymore to those who used to make fun.

It's good to be skeptical. It's also good to persevere despite skepticism.

I love science.

I love it because I love truth and science is simply a process used to search out, find and establish truth.

[i]"And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart."[i]

Funny because what I've read from you so far, you have quite a DISDAIN for science. You love to tear down science that you don't like and to try to replace it with hypotheses of your own that don't even have a basis in science.…

BrownCoat,

You need to stop trolling and contribute something useful to this forum. This is your first and last warning.

I reviewed all of BrownCoat's messages and he/she appears to be trolling. SoSick actually contributes content.

Content.

Like ridicule and deliberate attempts for attention by way of the old "chip on the shoulder" routine?

I don't call that content, I call THAT trolling. Trolling for attention. I really don't see a difference between these two posters other than that one is a self-professed Christian and the other is expressly not.

Then again, you haven't been able to read BrownCoat's 6 posts and realize that none of them had any content. SoSick does not come close to those kinds of numbers.

What was that you said on the other thread about calling the kettle black? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

ahem.

My routinely insulting behavior?

I think, Pwcca, you simply do not have a clue as to how insulting many of your posts, or some others, are.

The difference is, most people are grown up enough to shrug it off or chuckle, or, simply chock it up to your ignorance.

but boohooing. well c'mon now.

Life simply will never be perfect no matter where you go I guess. Maybe you could work a charm or two to fix it.

Think about it, methane and a charm a two... it could be a start for you.

Or did you want a picture of santa claus too, is that it?

I don't get any nicer than this. ask anybody. This is real real good for me. I've always been this way. Since I was a little kid. Simply noooo good. Tooo goood. I used to get yelled at for smiling, think about it. That was real hard to figure out as a kid. Are you angry at me for smiling too?

I won all the contests though. i just figured everyone was angry at me because they were jealous. You aren't jealous are you Pwcca?

It's true, i'm a very content orientated indivdual. Peace and content. All is well then.

I like science, can't say I love it.

Unfortunately, evolution simply is not science. More like a wanna bee.

Remember when Monty Python used to do that routine Russ?

I'm a wanna beeeee...

That's evolution to me.

Sure they did. Deciding whose post has "content" and whose does not is simply an opinion. It sounds to me like you're picking and choosing based on whose words appeal to you more and - more importantly - whose words do not. But it's your forum, you're welcome to (mis)manage it as you see fit. If nothing else, I am thankful that you've arranged it so no one can any longer logon anonymously and take crap shots at their fellow posters. These people are the real detriment to this discussion board after all - though strangely they have not been reprimanded whereas BrownCoat has for stating his matter-of-fact, albiet blunt, opinion. Moreover, I don't see any difference between any of his posts and those of certain posters here who routinely call others idiots. I guess you feel it's different when they're not calling you an idiot directly. But like I said, it's you're forum - I'm just saying all of the above so that it's been said.

What was that you said on the other thread about calling the kettle black?

The pot calling the kettle black. It's an idiom. It's when you, yourself, accuse other people of doing the very thing you're guilty of in the first place. And this comment has nothing whatsoever to do with this thread, so I fail to see the connection here. You were asking others to narrow down their posts and stay on topic when you are the most prolific among us with regards to veering dramatically off topic. And that's not to say I care to quibble at length over this but you brought it up (here of all places) so..

Pwcca,

With all due respect, you are as wrong as you could be.

Quote

Not at all.

SoSick has over 800 posts and has regularly offered helpful information, encouragement and evidence. They have also been sarcastic and harsh at times as well.

BrownCoat has 6 posts. 5 of them are nothing more than trolling. The other is useless but acceptable.

I don't allow trolling on this forum and have little tolerance for people who call others names in 4 of their first 6 posts on this forum. You'll be hard-pressed to find a good moderator who will disagree with me.

You're obviously allowing your bias against my God and/or my belief system to cloud your judgment against me, and that is completely unfair. Please take a good, hard look at yourself and see why you're acting so irrationally.

About staying on focus with posts.

Linda is the first one who asked for focus, and so I simply agreed and attempted to do so. Next, she immediately changed the focus several times and asked questions that were all over the place, so I simply obliged her again and responded to all her questions.

Why are you accusing me of doing the very thing your friend Linda is doing?

Amazingly, you're being incredibly biased in both of these situations.

Yes Russ, indeed the fan is always on.

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ithitsthefan.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/noshots.gif" alt="" />

methane is methane, and the kettle is as black as an an oil slick.

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jockey.gif" alt="" />

BUT... having sent in my two cents in this dept for a while, I have had enough already of the nonsensical logic that parades as science... not yours... for a bit. And the christian bashing starting up again... well,, I really don't even want to go there but some opeople are forever stuck in that corner.

C'est la vie. God will handle them himself. It's not Christians they hate really anyway, it's God himself. You are just his nearest rep today. I wish them all a lovely life today because hell awaits for eternity.

To add my two cents', the sorts of things BrownCoat was saying were useless for any discussion. I agree that someone saying such things without adding any substance, should be warned. I also very much agree with Pwcca, that others here are allowed to make such comments to other members when on every other forum I belong to they would also receive a warning. What does it matter that there is also useful content elsewhere? Don't tell me that "if you're a grown-up, you can take it." Rules exist on forums to make them respecftful, generally friendly places to be and those rules should be applied consistently. I do not see that happening here.

Bias has nothing to do with the black kettle idiom I'm afraid.

Let's all of us please drop with the accusations. Really. No more of the "You're this"s and the "You're that"s, or the "You don't know what you're talking about"s.

It's becoming an overused expression on this forum and is, besides, very assinine in nature - if someone's wrong, don't tell them, show them.
