What exactly can be expected of chlorella? Does it chelate mercury, or just stir it up?
My wife bought some, and threw 3 capsules each into our mix of supplements one day thinking it would be a way to continue detoxing mercury.
About an hour later my ears started ringing like I was inside a church bell. This lasted about 24 hours before it tapered off, along with a touchy disposition and foggy brain.
Advice?

I personally would not fool around with agents like chlorella etc, unless you handle them. They can definitely stir things up and make things worse. Some do well, others do not and can get sicker after it.
I highly recommend the detox protcol by Andrew Hall Cutler. Biochemist who has studied mercury toxicity for many years, cured himself and now works with adults and kids around the world. Two forums alone are devoted to his protocol and many have been previously injured by wrong protocols and have managed to improve by his protocol.
Some on here are using it also and seem to be doing pretty well all things considered. It is a much safer and well thought out protocol and more effective in my opinion. Only one I tolerated, though even then I had to start on a reduced dose.
You can read about it online if you look up Andy Cutler mercury chelation protocol. Google it and check it out. His book is also advertised on this forum. Top left in yellow. So the owner Russ is also impressed by it!
Definitely be on your guard with protocols that may not have been so thoroughly tested or as effective and safe. Chlorella maybe a great food supplement for health, but it tends to mobilise mercury. Yes it can bind it, but it can also mobilise it too much. Again mercury can readily migrate into worse and more sensitive areas.

most chlorella that you find on the market is contaminated with mercury and other toxins ,this may be what happened in your case ,chlorella is more of a blood cleanser and not a chelator ( if you can find a uncontaminated source which can be diffiicult now adays ) algin is much more reliable to use and is not a chelator either, but will mop up mercury that is in the bloodstream

Thanks Bex and Heavymetal.
I'm aware of the Cutler protocol. I am hesitant due to our own Russ's hesitancy to play with the "chemical" chelators, which are heavily recommended there. As it happens, I'm on this forum, not that one.
Also, I don't really want to involve a doctor for prescriptions and would prefer to discover a delf-directed chelation protocol using easily available herbs. That's why I post this question here rather than there.

I'm doing the cutler protocol and never felt better. If you are mercury toxic, you have the most toxic non-radioactive substance poisoning your whole body, doing more damage than DMSA will IMO.
Just use ALA if you are that concerned.
Chlorella makes me a wreck. I stomach it fine, but I get depressed, emotional, extremely tired. Its one of the worst things I ever did to myself to force that down for 6 -8 months. It was not a healing reaction, as at no point did I ever feel better when on it, and once off it, I felt worse than before.

Hi Will, I understand your concern on the drug chelation route. But DMSA is probably the least harmful out of many other options that are "natural".
I am highly chemically sensitive and weak and DMSA, done properly was tolerated by me.
Russ cannot be too against this, he advertises the book on this forum and recommends it! Also mercury toxic kids are often treated with DMSA and do ok on that. Some people will of course be sensitive to it and have to move onto something else.
You do not have to do that at all, but reasons why I suggest it is because of the long painful path I went down with many "natural" chelators, which far from chelating simply mobilised and caused a lot of needless suffering.
At any rate, ALA being an antioxidant is used by some successfully without ever using DMSA. ALA is available in healthfood shops.
DMSA is available online, does not have to be prescribed at all. Many of us on here have chelated ourselves with the help of a good book and purchasing supplements and chelating agents without even going to a doctor.
But again if you prefer the herbal route, I am sure someone on here will be able to point one out for you that they felt helped them.
I do know one thing I used that certainly pushed metals out of me. It was a homeopathic detox kit from "Heels". Stimulating the natural detox pathways and organs in the body and there is no doubt it worked. Potent and often I had to take less drops because it produced a lot of detoxing.
You take the drops in 1.25 litre bottle of filtered or jug water. Mix it gently and drink through the course of the day. So that is another option.
Chlorella may well help you. Some do respond ok and feel it's aided metal detox, but again it mobilises mercury and does not always seem to take it out safely. Can make symptoms much worse for many.
NDF is a product that is specifically designed for mercury detox and has chlorella in a nanonised form and contains cilantro also etc. Absorbed far better and more effective. Available also online and there is a website specifically about the product, about the guy who created it and how to use it. He uses that on many mercury toxic people /kids.

I know ppl who are ill taking chlorella or ALA without amalgams.
Also they did a study and people were given placebo DMSA, ALA and they complained of side effects. Im not sayin gits all in the mind but alot of fear of what supplements can dp can actually cause the symptoms because I have been their myself and used to have the ringing ears, dizzyness, fever..its possible to make yourself this way unconciously lol I never believed it until I realised I had hidden fears.

Wow all those supplements sound great but it must be really expensive and take up a good amount of your day to stick with it all.
Chlorella chelates (stirs up) and binds. I am not sure how strongly it binds. you might want to eat garlic with it if you aren't using anything else, or else just use a little bit every day.
The chlorella is pretty good I think... but anytime you chelate and begin to have results you will have noticable signs of mercury or other heavy metal toxicity seem show up. I think it's part of the process of the metals being released and enetering your bloodstream on their way to elimination. Most people do go through that at first, and then every now and then also while chelating. I know I do, chelating has not been fun. But it did help me avoid being confined to a wheelchair and who knows what else much worse than that.

Andy Cutler does'nt even claim to be a biochemist. He admits he never had even one biochem class in college.

Where is this admission Jill? I have his book which is also advertised on this forum (in yellow on top left) which also has him admitting his history in this field and here is a link about the book http://www.noamalgam.com/ and a list of his qualifications http://www.noamalgam.com/vita.html. And who did he make this "admission" too?

I had strange reactions to Chlorella. Unbeknownst to me chorella is not such a hot idea if amalgams are in, or out for me in my case.
I took chlorella with amalgams in (up to 30 tabls a day) no reaction for 3 months. However, 6 months later when I learned I needed to get the amalgams out, I thought I would try chlorella again and it made me insane. Depression, fear, anxiety, I could hardly leave the house, it was Christmas and I felt like I was so lost. It was weird the way it was fine Jab-Apr of the year and then in December it caused a slew of issues.
I also tried it after the amalgams were out, still didn't do well.

Hi Glancia, I am about to try chlorella again. I am going to be cautious because I know what you mean about those symptoms. Some people do not like the way chlorella works in them with the mercury. It can really mobilise it and make symptoms worse. Others do extremely well on it.
I like the sound of it because it has a pretty impressive array of nutrients that maybe helpful to me. along with spirulina. If I find myself getting symptoms I may stop, depending on how tolerable they are. I know some detox can be helpful, but I dont want to make matters worse.
Your situation reminds me of something similar I heard. A girl tried NDF (which is chlorella based but it's in nanonised form). It is easily absorbed and apparently much more effective. It also contains some cilantro. She took it and seemed fine with it for sometime and then out of the blue it began producing reactions. They took a break and things cleared again, but the doc put her back on it again and this time she was shattered. Apparently two years later she is still ill (bedridden mostly).
Though this could also be from the fact that at some point mercury does start to leak back out in some people and they can get extremely sick for a prolonged period of time. whether the NDF is directly repsonsible for her worsening or indirectly responsible for encouraging the stored mercury to begin to unleash I dont know.
But for me, I was ill but a DMPS IV appeared to set off the stored mercury to erupt outwards. So I was often bedridden also and it took about two years as well to improve. during that two years it was just about ongoing eruption of toxins, worsening symptoms, then a little respite, then back again and so on and so on. Continual and torturous.
Andy Cutler's protocol eventually aided me through that much better because it enabled me to detox faster and safer. Other stuff just made the symptoms MUCH worse, though I improved a bit after each excretion, the hell to go through it was intolerable. Andy's was safer and more effective I believe.

Hi Bex,
Yeah, I feel much safer and have much better results just following the Andy Cutler protocol. I actually am doing great on the chelation part, its the adrenals and the thyroid that are delaying being more aggressive.
I am at the 6 month post amalgam removal point, so I figured July might be a little tough going, but what I really discovered is most of my issues are related to the adrenals and thyroid and I just need to get some rest, which I am finally able to do because my step children are with their mom the next three weeks except for one day and then they will go to surf camp for two weeks. When the kids were in school I was doing so much better because all I had to do was fix dinner. They are teenagers and it's a very emotional time for them and me and it takes a lot of energy to parent right now. I am looking forward to summer being over because it allows me longer periods of rest.
Back to chlorella, yes, a strange phenonmenon, works for some, not for others. I had the same source of chlorella too, from Japan where they grow it in vats so its not contaminated with mercury. I might try it again after 6 months after I have had a chance to get more of the mercury out with the DMPS, ALA and Algin.

HI Gabriella, I think I have adrenal issues myself because of a viral/bacteria infection. Since then I have to pace myself. And far from exercise being beneficial, so often it is deterimental to me. I have constantly be onguard not to go over the limit. So all I can handle is about 20 minutes of walking every other day. I can go to half an hour, but still feel something isn't right. If I do it everyday? I also feel I'm pushing it.
Once I used to do that and get fitter and be able to go for longer, not since all this.
I am looking forward to trying the chlorella and spirulina. But again, just concerned about the aspect of it mobilising metals too much. I am not one to excrete easily. Have you tried spirulina as a supplement?
It is not quite like chlorella. Does not mobilise metals as such, yet contains an impressive load of nutrients, similar to chlorella, but not identical.
It's good you are taking it easy and being careful and hopefully the chelation will eventully remove the cause of your adrenal problems. Until then, I guess all you can do is sit tight and keep on.
Pushing yourself with chelation can have the opposite effect. People think they are speeding things up, but often it slows it down because the body can only chelate what it can. If you go beyond that? You can get a backfire effect and then you end up having to recover, which can take a long time. So far from speeding it up, it often frustrates the whole process. You may get away with it, but it's best to do things at a rate you can handle. Side effects are ok, and it's ok to feel poorly during detox, but not to where it's way over the mark. Just puts undue stress on the body.

Cutler has an undergrad degree in physics from Berkeley and a PhD in chemistry.I was pre-med at Berkeley and I know that not one biochemistry class is required for a degree in physics or chemistry .He admits that he never studied biochemistry in college.

Well Jill, as I am not qualified in those areas I really cannot argue with you about it. It's up to Mr Cutler.
Whatever his qualifications, his protocol does seem to be very sound and makes a lot of sense. For me, it has done what he said it would, cut down on unnecessary mobilising and related side effects.

Hi Bex, thanks for the message.
Yes, I have to do the same, watch my energy output. Right now I need to recover from having the kids home for summer. I think I used up the reserves I had built up, but I haven't totally regressed, its just that now I need to rest a lot.
No, I haven't thought about spirulina. I am taking so many supplements right now and I seem to be on a roll as to what is working. Chlorella is really out of the picture I think until my adrenals can handle it.
I get these really awesome days, so I know I am close to a breakthrough, I just need to rest to get there. Now that the kids are gone for the next 6 weeks I can also spend more time in the Word and prayer and when I do that I notice that my progress goes faster. Haven't really had too much time to that since mid June.
Thanks so much for all your encouragement <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Anon and Jill, I have been using Andy Cutler's protocol since March and have had great results! I have steadily improved. If you go to his forum on the yahoo website there are several success stories and many on this forum that will vouch for the soundness.
It seems the only thing that really gets in the way of folks getting healed is patience or a weird circumstance. Most of us are making progress that employ this protocol from what I can see. And from everything else out there that I have read as well as my experience with doctors and naturpaths, this is the ONLY thing that has helped me consistently.
