Hi sosick, interesting that you should mention this. My first amalgams that I had done by a general dentist (not biologic) and I never got sick.
no protection, just suction and him being very careful.....later biologic dental work to get the rest out, I get ill.
I cannot fathom why this is. I guess basically it is simply down to the dentist himself, is he honest? Is he good? is he thorough? It is very hard to know which way it will go and not all general dentists are going to do a bad job of mercury removal, simply because they still use it. I think if they are somebody who is genuine and listens and does what you ask, I dont see how they'll do much worse.
You can get skunks of biologic dentists. I know a few that actually have left amalgam in and simply covered it over with composites, even though they proclaimed on their website about how awful mercury is, how they suffered, and how they wish to help people and get it out (I speak of a dentist here in my own country new zealand when I say this). And to find out he doesn't even do a thorough job!!!! On top of this, he knows about cavitations and knows how they can form and yet he only removes the periodontal ligament after a tooth extraction if the patients asks, but if they dont? He will leave it in there (knowing that they are a prime cause of cavitations).
Now, we all know that most people do not even KNOW cavitations and how on earth would a patient know to even ask that? How cruel is that?
So yeah, there is great evil/dishonestly on both sides of this and some are in biologic dentistry because they can appeal to the sick and raise hopes. Not all, I know some are in there because they genuinely care and hate mercury as much as we do and want very much to heal patients.
