I have now had all my amalgams removed. Yee Haa! but ....... am having major problems with pain. The teeth that were worked on are very sensitive to hot and cold and pressure but as well as that I seem to have a muscular problem with my jaw that is also very painful. Has anyone experienced either of these problems and have any suggestions? It is 6 weeks since I had the first side done and 4 weeks since the second side. The pain seemed to be getting a little better but now seems to be getting worse again. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I gather this is quite common, and is something to do with the composite fillings, which are less flexible than those lovely mercury fillings which leaked all over the place! I think it is a question of sitting it out.

Do make sure though that none of the fillings are too high - ie, that the dentist smoothed them down enough so they are not disrupting your bite. I have a composite-filled tooth which is sore, and it turned out to be because it was too high, and each time I bit down the tooth above would jar the nerve. A little sanding down by the dentist is all it takes to sort this problem.

The jaw pain sounds like you might have bite problems. I also have a cross-bite, and for this reason, my dentist won't fix permanent crowns until the cross-bite is corrected, as she will never be able to get them right until it is. You might want to have this checked out, as it could tie in with the tooth pain you are having.

Nicola,

How do they correct the cross bite. I have malloccusion and a narrow palate and was told I need to get some type of palate expanders and braces to correct it, but I haven't done anything because I'm afraid to put something in my mouth that might make other things worse because of the mercury.

Thanks.

I have had the same sensitivity after amalgam removal. Try sensodyne toothpaste that seemed to help me and the sensitivity has subsided

My dentist is quite vague about how to correct the cross-bite. The real way to do it is to wear braces, which for most of us is unacceptable - I went through all that when I was a kid, and have no intention of repeating the exercise! I think my cross-bite is due to the cusp of a wisdom tooth which won't allow the upper teeth to sit squarely on the tooth - the upper jaw has to slide to the left in order for me to be able to bite together. She mentioned about taking out the wisdom tooth, so the teeth can sit squarely, wearing a nightguard (not sure what that does) and having osteopathic treatment to correct the neck and back muscles which are out of place because of the cross-bite. Sounds OK-ish to me. If it gets rid of my cracking jaw, tender spots on my scalp and swollen glands that'll be great.

Sorry - I'm not much help with the malloccusion (what's that?). The palate expanders etc sound a bit scary - do you have any other options?

Nicola

I had 6 amalgams removed 3 weeks ago and two of the teeth are sensitive to cold and hot , my dentist told me that the two that are sensitive were deeper fillings than the others and said it will take up to three to six months for the sensitivity to go away totally (he explained that when you disturb the nerves in the tooth that it will take a while for the nerves to settle down again ) makes sense to me !! as for the jaw pain
it sounds like your bite is to high on one side of your mouth had the same thing before amalgam removal the dentist adjusted the bite and problem was solved

Thanks for your help guys. For the sensitivity, I will try the toothpaste and hang in there.
With the jaw issue, I have had my bite adjusted a couple of times now and he is sure it's right and I can't feel any teeth hitting when I bite. I went to a chiropractor and he adjusted my jaw (in fact been twice) but it just seems to ease a bit and then get sore again. It is really getting on top of me cause it is so painful. Plus after all the effort I made to get my stomach and liver healthy again and now here I am taking painkillers! I said I wouldn't do that again!

Yep had exactly the same problem 6 months ago when I had 24 amalgams removed and replaced. One of my teeth (big molar) went bad. I believe that the dentist was at fault but as we all know we don't have a leg to stand on with the dental industry. Was very distressed and lived on heavy duty painkillers for 5 weeks. Valium on Xmas day!!! Nice one.

However, with the sensitivity which I also experienced, that has virtually gone. It took about 4-5 months for that to go though. Now there is the occasional twinge of sensitivity but not too bad.

My TMJ problem went out of control during the time of removal and for about a month or two afterwards. Mine went but has now come back 6 months later. Hopefully it just has something to do with the 6 month dumping thing. I haven't started chelation therapy yet.

It gets better!! As long as they didn't do a major stuff up like I had you will gradually get rid of these other problems. 99% guaranteed !!

Rachie
