I had five fillings replaced with white composites about a two months ago. I only have one tiny mercury filling left in one of my wisdom teeth. I also have a gold cap (nhs). I seem to have a problem with a bitter metallic taste in my mouth which I had for a while before the filling removal, only it seems to worse at the mo. could the new composites cause a bad taste aswell. Or do you think its just the mercury release from having them removed. Also I am not sure whether the gold cap was placed over a mercury filling aswell which I have heard is dangerous. Would an xray be able to get through the gold crown and see if there was a filling there?

Jamie,

What were the composites made of. If you don't know, contact your dental office and get the manufacturer's name and the brand name of the filling material. If you post it here, we'll look it up and see if we can post a material safety data sheet on it.

Gold fillings contain copper which can cause symptoms similar to mercury. There is a lot of information about copper toxicity on the net and Dr. Cutler's Book .

I don't know. Your dental records should contain this information, however.

Look forward to hearing back so we can further investigate this.

The problem is, that I was de-registered from my NHS dentist, because of going to a mercury free one. They seem reluctant give my details to my new dentist. Also if I start asking the manufacture's name and brand of filling material from my new dentist, might I upset them too,(like I don't trust them or something)

Looking back over my life, I have come to realize that the most hurtful, harmful and expensive events in it have been caused by people who don't care.

As I began to change my attitude and take personal responsibility for my life, some people around me didn't like it because nobody likes to be questioned, especially when it implies that you're questioning their skill or integrity, but it's a perfectly normal thing to do. We don't completly trust strangers the first time we meet; that trust grows with (good) experience.

Unfortunately, I can not number the times I have heard about someone going into a dentist, requesting safe, mercury-free fillings and then walking out with a fresh shiny, amalgam in their mouth. It's amazing and astounding; almost beyond belief.

It's undoubtedly hard to question those who provide services to you, whether it be your mechanic, your doctor, or your dentist, but I have learned this:

(1) They are working for you. You have every right to question what they are doing, especially when it affects your health so intimately, and

(2) If they are offended by your questions, they are more-than-likely the wrong person for the job.

I wish I could express the freedom I now enjoy (largely because of my mercury removal) that allows me to say "no, I'm gonna' check somewhere else" or "would you mind performing this service this way". This tremendous freedom allows you to take control of your health and life albeit at the risk of offending some, no matter how polite you are (I'm a big believer in being polite).

In my experience, it gets much easier to take this kind of control once you've detoxed mercury for awhile (mercury tends to make people timid and fearful... according to studies I've read, and in my personal experience, I now know how true it is).

The bottom line is this. If someone is your true friend, they look out for your best interest. If a dentist is providing quality dentisty and taking pride in their work, they will not be offended by questions and concerns. If they are offended, it's a very good sign they are the wrong person for the job.

Be encouraged.

It's not easy to take control of this situation, but it's a skill that gets easier with time and it well worth the effort. It also applies to nearly all other areas of life. You have the right and the responsibility to yourself and those who love and care about you, and you can do it.

Looking at the world through the fearless eyes of a mercury-free body is indeed a new paradyme.

Don't let a few grumpy people stop you. You're on a great road. Let's be sure you make it all the way to the end.

I agree with Russ, it is very difficult to stand up for yourself because of the mercury and because they do get so offended and act like you are crazy, but you won't regret having asked the questions-you might regret not asking. I learned too that if I ask and they respond negatively, then they are not going to be helping me and I didn't waste anymore time with them and tried someone else.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that your dentist has to give your records to your new dentist and you have a right to all of your records as well.

thanks for the advice.
I have tried to get my old records sent. My New dentist say's he can request them but my old dentist doesn't have to send them and can keep hold of the records for eleven years. My old Dentist say's I can't request them and have to get my new dentist to request them ????? does anyone know if the patient can demand that the records are sent

Wow. There is something fundamentally wrong with a system that does not allow you to retrieve your own medical records.

I would research what the law (you're not in the U.S., right?) says and then start using some big legal words, after you've asked nicely first, of course .

It never ceases to amaze me what some humans will do to "express" a little power and hurt others. It's exactly this type of situation that should never be allowed to happen.

Sometimes it's best to put everything in writing so you have a record of your requests/denials so if you find out later that they cannot refuse to give you your records, you have a legal weight to hold over their head. We have to remember, the "law" (statute) is there (supposedly) to protect us and like a dishwasher, it only works if we use it.

Wow (again).

Hi Jamie,

I have two gold crowns.....and the way I know they still had mercury under them.....I felt an electrical charge when they tried to put them on....I told each dentist about this and each told me it was nothing. Have you ever gotten a piece of foil in your mouth and it actually has an electrical charge and you start salivating......well, it's the same feeling.

I've had X-Rays taken of my crowns several times and they look the same as all the others....so I don't think an X-Ray will show any mercury under the gold crown....although, I'm not an expert.

Okay, now I'm going to show my stupidity here but have you just asked the dentist or the nurse to give you the name of the material they used (off the record).....I mean, really reassure them that it's just for your personal information.....or tell them a friend asked you what they used......Russ did ask.....heh heh.

Elaine
