Russ you think you've got problems in the USA? At least you have a choice. In Australia a press release on 20th Feb announced that the Federal Government is phasing out the incandescent light globe (the ordinary light globe) over the next 3 years.
See this local newspaper report--- http://www.thewest.com.au/default.aspx?MenuID=28&ContentID=21785

A government website lists a FAQ's page see----http://www.greenhouse.gov.au/education/cfls.html

Of course no mention of Mercury or how do deal with broken globes!!!! Effectively this will mean most will be forced to use CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lights or Globes). The only alternative (if you can afford to) being to retro fit your entire home with energy inefficient halogens!! Of course that doesnt mean you wont be exposed in other houses, school, workplace, public area, shops and so on.
What can one to do?
So is that one small step forward and one giant step backward???
