Not getting amalgam fillings removed is like having an I.V. drip containing arsenic and having the doctor say that stopping it may cause more problems that it will solve.

I understand that removing the fillings MAY cause some additional exposure, but leaving them in will definitely cause additional exposure, and much more at that (unless they are removed completely improperly).
