I get this question a lot so I'll have to write it up eventually. Just don't have time at the moment.

Basically, did 3 weekly DMPS sessions followed by 50 gram vitamin C drip. I would not do it again however. I didn't know much about mercury or detox at the time.

I played racquetball to sweat, which is a great way to rid mercury.

Took Sun (brand) chlorella faithfully for months.

Tried ALA but got horrible headache after 1 day and had to stop. I don't recommend this until the later stages of detox or until you're feeling strong.

Took protein drink mixed with water every morning. This contains a little sulphur in the form of cysteine.

Of course did normal slew of vitamins. I didn't know about Algin until much later (too bad for me).

Lot's of C and E.

I'll have to put my mind to work to remember more. It was quite a while ago now. I'll eventually post it and let this forum know where. Unfortunately, it probably won't be much help because I now know much more than I did then.

Hope this helps.

Russ,

Do you agree with Cutler that since you didn't use ALA, you still have mercury in your brain? Have you ever reconsidered using ALA according to his protocol in order to get the mercury out?

Since you didn't use ALA, but feel many psychological benefits, do you have any explanation for that?

Thanks, Russ.

Hi, sorry I know i'm not Russ, but just wanted to make a point here. People who do not have significant brain mercury, will find they can usually cure themselves relatively easily by other detoxing .

Those that have significant brain mercury may find they are unable to improve until they use ALA. At least that is what I have read. Andy has mentioned this in his book amalgam illness, diagnosis and treatment.

Russ may have had mental symptoms, but that does not always mean it's from brain mercury. A poisoned liver can cause mental symptoms, or other toxic organs/gut etc. Also, brain mercury can cause physical symptoms, so that's why it can be very hard to tell where the mercury is.

Andy seems to feel that brain mercury causes more candida issues, plus hormonal problems. stubborn cases that just don't seem to be getting enough results from other mercury detoxes, are usually a candidate for ALA trial.

one person I know did it all and detoxed their mercury with every method they could. But they could not budge certain symptoms and they were quite distressed by it. Once they got onto ALA, they completely cured it.

Bex, no need to say sorry - I really apreciate your advice.

I'm having the last of my amalgams out today. I'm thinking of monitoring my situation and mainly using regular sauna to clear the extracellular mercury.

Then I may try DMPS (if I can get a prescrip) or DMSA using Cutler's protocol. Do you know if there are any risks to using either if you're NOT mercury toxic?

Also, (and I know you're not a doctor, but, what the hell!), I've been sauna'ing for the past few days. I'm ok with that with amalgams still in, but my muscles feel sort of tired and weak. Do you think that's from the sauna? Or perhaps from the anti-candida diet I've been trying (almost no carbs, though I gave in and ate some brown rice because of the weakness).

Thanks, Bex!

Anonymous,

Have you been taking any nutritional support with the sauna. I know it can deplete magnesium and minerals. When I tried the sauna's I had muscle tightness afterwards because I was not supplementing. Sherry Roger's book "Detoxify or Die" describes a sauna detox program which includes nutrients to take before you go into the sauna and sauna replenishing nutrients afterwards. I think there is a group on Yahoo that discusses sauna detox also - maybe you want to check it out if you haven't already.

Hope this helps.

I just checked every reference to ALA in the index and I didn't find that statement anywhere. Could you give me a page number please. Thanks.

The body naturally produces glutathione which detoxes mercury in the brain (so far as I understand it). You can increase glutathione production with N-Acetyl Cysteine or chlorella. I originally used Sun (brand) chlorella because I don't know about NAC.

Russ, here's a quote from the index of Cutler quotes, with link;

Is lipoic acid the only thing that will take stuff out of the brain in
your opinion?

It is the only thing known to do it safely. The old (and very nasty)
chelating agent BAL will do it. There is some rumor and innuendo that
cilantro will do it which I don't completely discount, but I wouldn't say it
is by any means proven.

Andy Cutler

Undenatured whey and selenium are huge aids to increasing glutathione as well. In one forum, they are doing this as the main part of their treatment for candida and other toxicity, alongside diet. I think milk thistle is another help also.

Oh, I thought you were saying that Cutler said that in his book.

In short, I don't think everyone has all the answers, neither do I completely agree with everyone's ideas. Nevertheless, I do think Cutler's book is the best I've found.

I also find that Cutler sometimes makes what I call "absolutist" statements. This is a style of speaking where things sound like absolute truths, but taken in context (which is very important), the statements are actually limited in scope. Unfortunately, this style can lead to frequent misunderstandings. Fortunately, the book doesn't seem to be written in this way much (perhaps a little).

Just a thought.

I agree, Russ. No one knows all of the answers. I have Cutler's book and while it is excellent I don't think that it's perfect.

My doctor says that he has helped mercury toxic people with IV DMPS and I think that he's telling the truth. However, Cutler says that IV DMPS is absolutely useless and dangerous.

Every individual is different and what works for one person may not work for another person that has the same symptoms.

I dont agree with everything Cutler says either. I get annoyed on occassion with the absolutist statements also.

DMPS IV can work, but because of the doctors who have used it wrong and harmed patients, it gets a bad name. DMPS IV for me was a bit of a nightmare, because it pulled so much mercury out of my deeper areas and into the system, that I was beseiged by symptoms and from then on.

It forced my body to erupt a lot of mercury and from there, that mercury would rise up onto my skin in the form of rashes whenever I exercised or bathed. Those rashes would increase upon me taking anything that encouraged further mercury mobilisation in some way. So I knew it was mercury.

The rashes were a way the mercury did start to come out of me through the skin, but the DMPS IV was pretty devastating to me. I do not believe it was done safely though. It was a DMPS IV challenge test, which can be very very risky. They give you a HUGE amount of It in ONE shot. This really should be avoided. The doctor should be using a safe protocol, they should have a safe track record with other patients and should know what they are doing.

For me it was like lighting a match near gasoline. But done correctly, I hear it can be very good. But there are stories out there of awful outcomes from DMPS IVs because of stupid doctors doing it wrong.

Andy states that if you are not mercury toxic, taking chelators should produce no effect, positive or negative. In fact, he even recommends that if you don't have amalgams (such in the case of children) that doing a couple rounds of chelation is a good way to confirm diagnosis of mercury toxicity. For adults, its harder because you can't do this with amalgams in, and once you get your amalgams out, you will have some exposure, so its harder to use such a theraputic trial to confirm things.

Bex, any good Dr will tell you that chelation via DMPS or anything, is not an overnight cure. You may have become symptomatic after a DMPS challenge, that is actually a good thing. the mercury is being released, you obviously had a lot. What you needed to do was stick with it, and add a combo of chelation variables, chlorella, DMSA, whatever to lockup and contain stray mercury in between DMPS. The more variables the better according to every expert I have spoken to... spoken to personally Bex about my symptoms, not just read their books.

I went through the heavy returning symptoms part already, complaining steadily to my Dr and being told to have patience.. it took about 4-5 weeks of twice weekly IV EDTA and once weekly DMPS to get to the point where I can now go a full week without EDTA/DMPS and still feel fine (am doing the DMSA at night remember). I can't go more than 7-8 days though or symptoms start returning. I assume, if my Dr and Dr friends are correct, that eventually I should feel fine for the most part but will still continue on some sort of regular chelation for a while. they do sauna treatments at my Dr's office but I haven't even gotten to the point where they think it would be useful for me.

Sosick, that's true, it did erupt the stored mercury. And in a way it was a good thing, but a nightmare too. It did indeed force my body to begin detoxing it, because it had no choice.

Problem was, I had no clue about mercury then much. I did certainly try and aid this by pushing the detox more and I did use chlorella and other things. I was a mess of symptoms, intolerable. But I did keep trying for sure, i was doing all sorts of detoxing, trying whatever, but no matter what I did, the same symptoms occured, just absolutely unreal. I'd be almost busting out my face, I'd cry uncontrollably, salivate and my head would feel like it would explode. So I'd stop the detox, allow this to settle, i'd feel better for a day, but then things returned when more mercury would rise to the surface to be excreted.

Maybe you're right, maybe the more chelators the better, perhaps they all serve eachother in different ways, one mobilising, one binding etc, but then I just reacted to anything and everything I used.

Andy's protocol at that time was the only one I tolerated more and was able to stay on it longer and actually go through detoxing without screaming like a nutcase.

Not sure if yours would have helped me or not, because it depends on what reactions each person has, you maybe someone that tolerates chelating mercury better than others, or your regime is simply extremely well thought out, as it obviously is considering the experts you have consulted about it. Perhaps it would work as well for other people also.

Have you ever considered (curiosity wise) giving the cutler method a shot? even for a round and seeing what happens? without anything else? Just the DMSA every 4 hours. I know it sounds a drag, but it would be interesting what effect it might have on you. Whether you find it helpful or ineffective or makes you feel worse... Even if you gave it a go for about 3 days.

I can understand if you don't, you'e obviousy got the right method now, why change it? But I guess i was curious to see what would happen and whether you would find it just as helpful.

I tried some ALA, 2 60 mg tabs ea time for two days last week Bex and I got so constipated I thought was going to scream. And, during that I was taking DMSA and LOTS of fiber, which didnlt even help. I had to make an emergency appt with the colonic lady to get freed up from that one.

Sorry, not going there (ALA routines) again.

You really need a good Dr Bex. It helps to have a pro by your side through this. I probably would have given uop during the difficult early stages too but it was so evident from the good health of the other people this guy treats that giving up would probably not be in my best interest.

Come to think of it, Bex, I was NOT doing the DMSA on those 2 days when I did the ALA. Because of what you had said negating the DMSA.

Either way, the ALA alone is not for me I found that out. I do normally add one 60mg ALA to my smoothies now and then anyway, it seems to be ok when mixed in with all of the rset of that.

I do recall a very heavy duty metallic smell in the bathroom when I finally unlocked from the ALA, so given that, i would say it does defintely chelate and quite well but too much for me. The mercury you know, when it gets into your bowels on it's way out, literally paralyzes the muscles. The EDTA/DMPS, maybe the DMSA bind real good and also move more metal through your urine, which is a lot easier. I think I have that right, I should probably check, but if recall that is the idea. The EDTA actually dissolves a lot of other toxins which is cool too.

I meant trying the DMSA by itself. Taking one capsule every 4 hours around the clock for a few days non stop to see what happens? That's Andy's method, at least initially until the blood levels are reduced.

At any rate, yeah you're right one shuld have a professional by their side. My doctor is the only one in my city that really gets into this, but she has not been able to help me since other things happened to my health. My reations to chelation now are nil, non existant, no improvement, no reaction like I once got.

She had her own protocol which I was supposed to follow and I tried, but got too ill from the chlorella. I vomited non stop, because I'm allergic to it.

So that didn't work. She's tried DMSA because she did not want to do the DMPS on me at that time. But again, I still got reactions. She had wanted me on chlorella (two big scoops at night), which didnt last due to vomiting. So she got me on DMSA (250 mg) at night, with garlic, I don't remember much but I'm sure it was too much and she reduced it to only 50 mg once per week and even then I couldn't cope.

So I got on Andy's and found I could do it with the every 4 hour method at that time. So that's how I started making more strides then, but my problems now are further than mercury , as I believe I pretty much recovered from it at the time.

now? My doctor doesn't know what is wrong, it's a mystery and she's really overbooked and doesn't take much interest in testing. She's new agey and wastes a lot of my time and money when I do see her. So I stopped.

Every other doctor here is mainstream, they do not believe in mercury, or chronic fatigue syndromes, candida etc, and I am very ill, so I need my present doctor to sign my medical form.

It's hard becuase I just don't have the options as much where I am. Not enough doctors in these areas and those that are, don't seem to be able to help. I have travelled also to get to good doctors, but to no avail.

I also get contradictory answers from each one, and no results. Right now I am so tired and sick, that I cannot even consider doing much at all. Yes, I know my hands are working Sosick <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> but trust me, that's about the most active part of my body.
