Arginine and ornithine are the supplements I know of which can alleviate ammonia problems. These are often recommended to weight-lifters who eat a lot of protein, but also metabolite (and therefore produce high ammonia) protein through heavy work-outs during low carb diets. This will cause the body to burn protein and fat instead. Do not take arginine if you have herpes simplex.

Also digestive enzymes with high proteases can increase ammonia levels.

High ammonia is also a sign of the stomach bug Helicobacter Pylori. This produces ammonia to neutralize the stomach acid to ensure its survival. H P does not like acid environments. If a doctor suspects H. Pylori, an ammonia test is actually routine....

Ammonia can cause severe poisoning symptoms and will affect brain functioning.

It is important to monitore protein intake, but do not cut out protein totally as the body will then start to use up its own protein reserves so will in this case produce ammonia anyway.

There is also a disease in its own right where high ammonia is the problem. I cannot remember the name right now, but has something to do with a lack of enzyme which is needed to get rid of ammonia.
