Some of you may know my mum was taken back into hospital a few days ago. My aunt, sister and I had been caring for her at home. She had become doubly incontinent. We didnt question when the hospital put her in an isolation ward. Anyway to cut a long story short she caught CDIF from the hospital when she was in there a few weeks ago. We were only told last night what she has. We were not warned of the possibility even though the hospital suspected it all along and they now have so many cases, aftrnoon visiting has been stopped. My mum had virtually wasted away by the time she got taken in and was put initially on the very antibiotics which feed the bug. Luckily now she is on the correct medication, However obviously we are all at risk, not having been warned we have had very close contact with mum, kissing goodbye ect. Today I have been suffering from the most horrendous stomach pains so Im just praying I havnt caught it cos I think in my condition it would be the final straw. I know how much my mum has suffered bless her

sorry to hear about your mum, tracy. how "funny" that problems in the family always have to come in twos or threes.

can you tell me what CDIF is, I tried to google it but came up with no conclusive match.

Its an extremely nasty bug that effects the stomach and at the moment seems to be rife in hospitals like MRSA although it affects mainly old and vulnerable people also obviously with low immunity etc. Funnily we were only watching a documentary about it a couple of weeks ago and even healthy young people had been into hospital, caught it and died. It never rains but it pours ay Jinx

Tracy, are you referring to C. Difficile infection? As in clostridia difficile infection of the GI Tract?

I've been diagnosed with that a couple of times. It's a nasty infection and the Toxins that are produced by the bacterial infection in the gut make you feel so ill.

One of the best ways to get a handle on a C. Diff infection (in addition to the appropriate antibiotics, when needed) is taking a probiotic that has the saccharomyces boullardi strain in it.

There is a product called Florastor that is 100% saccharomyces boullardi. It should be taken even when the C. Diff. infection is being treated with antibiotics.

The first time I had C. Diff I had to go on antibiotics. But I was never told about the Florastor. I ended up with C. Diff again and Florastor was recommended by a new doc and it worked for me.

If you do a Google search for Florastor you can find out more information.

I wonder if it could be killed with any of these:

Colloidal Silver

Caprylic Acid Combination

Olive Leaf Extract

Tracy, that was my post above as Anonymous. I'm sorry I forgot to sign in.

Again, I urge you to get your hands on a probiotic that has the Saccharomyces Boullardi strain. The probiotic that was recommended to me by 4 different doctors was Florastor. It is 100% saccharomyces boullardi.

This is the probiotic strain that will immediately deal with C. Difficile. Florastor has a website. http://www.florastor.com/ There is information on the product, the saccharomyces boullardi strain and the different conditions it treats, including information on studies.

I'm sure there are other probiotics brands that have saccharomyces boullardi in it -- I've just personally had experience with Florastor.

I've gotten hospital-acquired C. Difficile infections twice. They are not something to ignore. They are very dangerous. GET YOURSELF SOME FLORASTOR!!! And if you need to take an antibiotic as well, then take it. You can take the Florastor while you are taking an antibiotic.

This infection can make people very ill. The two toxins (Toxins A and B) that this infection produces are wretched.

Here is some info on C. Diff:

http://www.cdiffsupport.com/aboutcdiff.html

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/c-difficile/DS00736

Here's a support group bulletin board. I have never visited, but it came up on a Google search: http://www.cdiffsupport.com/phpBB/

And from a medical journal:

A 2006 American Journal of Gastroenterology article
combining 31 randomized controlled trials determined that the active ingredient in Florastor, Saccharomyces boulardii, is indeed effective in helping to prevent AAD, and is the only probiotic that is effective in helping to prevent recurrent Clostridium difficile, or "C. diff"-associated diarrhea, a severe, potentially fatal form of diarrhea. (McFarland, L.V. (2006). Meta-analysis of probiotics for the prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and the treatment of Clostridium difficile disease. American Journal of Gastroenterology. 101, 812-822).

I'd be interested to know whether what Russ suggested would work. I would imagine that the silver would work. That colloidal silver is a marvelous remedy for nearly all bacterial, viral infections. But, in some cases of C. Diff, the disease progresses so rapidly and does so much damage to the intestines that there is no time to try different treatment methods. There are only a couple of antibiotics that will treat this condition.

When I came down with it the first time, it only took 24 hours for me to get to the point where an ambulance had to be called. I became quite ill.

After you get the acute infection dealt with, then you can begin to strengthen your body's terrain. C. Difficile can be damaging to the intestines. Depending upon your individual sensitivities, strengthening your body could include continuing to use something like Florastor, along with other probiotics, herbs, and remedies that are specifically targeted to heal intestinal tissues.

I'd be interested to know as well. Colloidal Silver kills most bacteria on contact, plus, it's impossible for bacteria to become immune or resistant because of the way the silver works. Also, there are no side effects.

If anyone with C is interested in trying Colloidal Silver for this ailment, please contact me within the next 7 days and I'll send it to you at my cost for the purposes of seeing if it works against C.

I've used Colloidal Silver (as have several of my friends) for food poisoning and had relief begin within about 30 minutes. It's probably my single favorite supplement. It has saved me a lot of pain and suffering.
