Merck Keeps Right On Pushing Fosamax Merck's second-best selling drug, Fosamax, has been linked to jaw bone death, a condition that can involve severe pain, infection, loose teeth, exposed bone, loss of function and disfigurement, according to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. I have seen it. but the patient was receiving other bisphosphonate therapy. He had had an extraction in the past and sequesters of bone had to be removed (as requested by his specialist). I doubt you would get spontaneous osteonecrosis, but after extractions it can happen. I have done many extractions in patients taking fosamax with no problems though. It could be related to the dosage however.
