I'm am so amazed that someone finally brought the vacuum cleaner to the next level of technology that I wanted to share it in hopes that someone else will benefit.
A little over a year ago I purchased a Dyson vacuum cleaner; You know, one of those that "doen't lose suction". Following is my impression of this machine.
This machine actually makes vacuuming enjoyable. It is very light, very quiet, very powerful, has tons of cool features and does not pollute the air with dust and stuff that makes you sneeze.
The vacuum is easy to push over carpet and can be used on carpet or floors. It's very powerful and I would estimate is only about 50% as loud as a typical vacuum cleaner. I've owned a Kirby for years and it's very heavy, very powerful, and does put some irritants into the air that make me sneeze.
My first experience with the Dyson is that it smelled like plastic when I opened up the package. This worried me at first because there is something that yells "cheap" when you smell plastic, but everything got better from there.
I followed all the instructions as anyone should do when unpacking and assembling a $400+ machine. I also went through the tutorial and learned how to properly use all the features. I highly recommend this as it only takes about 45 minutes (at most) but will save you loads of time when using the machine.
Going through the tutorial, I was impressed at every turn. As critical as I can be about the construction of technology, this machine is intelligently made, very-well thought out and certainly easy to use. It has all the features you would expect from a vacuum but has a number of nifty surprises, some of which floored me.
I have a long, straight stairway in my house that is carpeted. You can set the Dyson at the bottom of the stairs and the hose that is always attached to the machine (but you would never notice it) reaches all the way to the top. Sure, you have to pull a little, but it works and is very cool.
There is also a small hand-attachment that has a beater brush and works just like a miniature vacuum. The beater brush is vacuum driven but has a lot of torque which helps to demonstrate how powerful the vacuum really is.
The single most amazing thing (to me) is that there is no sign whatsoever of dust or irritants in the air when vacuuming. The vacuum does produce somewhat of a plastic odor but there is no sign whatsoever of dust. This was a welcome benefit for me considering that I can be sensitive to airborne dust.
There is only one thing I do not like about the Dyson. If you run over something (like a string or long carpet fiber) that causes the beater brush to stop spinning, the vacuum makes a very loud sound that might be best described as the noise made by one of those old toy trucks that purposefully made noise when you pushed it. It's like plastic gears grinding at a high speed.
Other than this single fault, I cannot find any problem with the machine, even after over a year of use. It is truly the next generation of smart and well-thought out appliances that will change the way you look at cleaning.
Oh, another feature that I really like is the way you empty the machine. By simply pushing a button to release the dust container, you can carry the container to a garbage can and then press another button to open the bottom completely up so that all the debris falls out. Now, just swing the bottom door closed (you don't even have to touch it) and pop the dust container back in. Very fast, easy, and cool.
Can you tell I'm very impressed with it? Good going Dyson. I also think things should work properly. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
