The Milgram Experiment
The Milgram experiment was a series of famous scientific studies of social psychology, intended to measure the willingness of a participant to obey an authority who instructs the participant to do something that may conflict with the participant's personal conscience.

The Emperor's New Clothes
The metaphor of this story involves a situation wherein the overwhelming (usually unempowered) majority of observers willingly share in a collective ignorance of an obvious fact, despite individually recognizing the absurdity. Such a case could be considered a classic example of groupthink, where individuals of a group agree with the majority rather than put themselves outside the comfort zone of what is accepted by the group.

Many devices used by mainstream media involve this type of coercion which relies on the human tendency to follow combined with a personal fear of rejection. The hypothesis of evolution is becoming known as a popular phenomenon that fits this metaphor, although for some, it works by inducing a belief in something because the alternative (a large information-based coverup) is too difficult or too frightening to accept (faith by default).
