My Gosh Amy-- You're mother isnt really right on this. Bipolar condition and other mental illnesses often DO run in families but if what your mother said was the case-- then there would be no hope for each and every person with any kind of mental illness. Genetics play a part- but they are not an END ALL. It just means you must pay more attention nutritionally to that genetic weakness in you.
What is often the case-- mercury and heavy metals, pesticides, solvents, flouride, etc. in one's body can tip someone over the edge and encourage that inherited weakness. Just as in the case of Autism.
Take away the straw that broke the camel's back and things heal again.
Did you know that essential oils such as Flax seed oil and Oil of Evening Primrose have shown very effective in dealing with Bipolar disorder?
PMS mood swings and bipolar run in my family-- My aunt has to take medication for Bi-polar. Every Menstruation time for her made her like another person.
I had the same problems-- especially during the time I had metal fillings. Getting my metal fillings out really helped-- but I also started taking Flax Seed oil and fish oils daily- and during PMS week, I will also take Oil of Evening Primrose.
I also found several herbs I can take around the time of my period that have leveled the brain chemicals/hormones-- Now I am not kidding you when I say that for this entire Spring/ Summer and Fall now that I dont go through depression or paranoia, etc. any longer.
My aunt won't take any of these supplements because she is tired of taking any more pills, capsules , etc.-- period.
she even purchases bags of MSG to put all over her food to keep it fresh-- MSG is the worst thing a person can put in their body. My aunt also smokes as well.
If she started cleansing her body of toxins-- intestinal, colon, gallbladder cleanse, etc.. -- and with the help of a nutritionist, took natural supplements and oils that could work for her--- avoiding what won't work for her, she may even find that she could be weaned off of most of her medication.
