I know what you mean Sandi. I have actually contemplated getting my teeth pulled lately instead of having them crowned and filled again (although in the end I'm sure I will be too scared to actually go through with getting them pulled). I am so frustrated by the conflicting information out there, that I am beginning to despair of even going through with materials testing anymore. It is another $300.00 expense that I really can't afford, and it seems that almost half the time it doesn't even catch all of the reactions that people have to a certain material anyway. $300.00 to only be 60% certain of a material? I might as well just take my chances and save my money, and just go for whatever materials have worked for the most other people, or alternatively, whatever is available in my area.
I think Russ really nailed it in his post--the best thing is to start at the beginning and avoid cavities in the first place. I'm sure kicking myself now for my poor dietary and dental choices early on in life. I can't fully fix what has already been done in my life, but hopefully I can at least spare my son of the same fate later on.
