You can actually get licorice root in a form known as DGL (Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice). DGL is licorice root that has been stripped of glycyrrhizin, a substance that occurs naturally in the herb that can raise blood pressure and lower potassium levels in some individuals.

Another idea is to try a supplement that contains not only licorice root, but also other nutrients that help support the adrenal glands. For example, Adrenal Support contains licorice root, along with several B-vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, zinc, bovine (from cows) adrenal tissue and protease enzymes (to help break down the adrenal tissue), and schizandra and borage oil (herbs that also promote adrenal health and function).

This kind of formula helps target adrenal function from multiple directions, since you may not know whether your adrenal function is due to vitamin or mineral deficiency, stress, etc. Of course, since mercury interferes with so many aspects of the body, it would be a good idea to make sure you're also addressing mercury toxicity with things like extra vitamin C, vitamin E, algin, other antioxidants, etc.

Hope this helps,
