Does anyone have any experience (and success) with using psychiatric drugs during detoxification? I went to the Amen Clinic (see www.amenclinic.com) last month and they run a great operation but they have little experience in dealing with heavy metal poisoning. The doctor there prescribed four different drugs but I am only taking one of them (Trileptal, an anticonvulsant) right now. The other drugs are an antidepressant, a stimulant, and a tranquilizer but I am hesitant to use them because they can cause serious side effects and they are addictive. I've run into serious trouble with psychiatric drugs in the past and I had some similar problems for a short time with the drugs that were prescribed at the clinic. My alternative medicine doctor agrees that Trileptal could be useful but like me he doubts that the other drugs would be helpful. Andy Cutler promotes the use of some psychiatric drugs during detoxification as a short term solution to keep a person from going over the edge or committing suicide. I'm sick as a dog from detoxification and I don't want to do anything that will make me worse. If anyone has some experiences in this area please share them with me.

I know for me, my experience with antidepressants has been pretty disastrous. I just got all the side effects and if anything did work, it was not long before the improvements left. I could never sustain it on them for some reason. I just got odd side effects and I gave up.
It's hard to find something that works when you have mercury because mercury messes up so many things and causes reactions to so much, that it's limited what you can tolerate.
I'm sure you've heard all this before, but are you following a candida diet? I'm sure you've read in Andy's book that candida can cause it's own seperate misery from the mercury. Both of them go together and their toxicities combined can be the last straw for many.
If you're not following it, you might need to. The things that can really screw a mercury toxic person up are sugar, gluten and yeast. They are the culprits that make life even worse. Limiting them is not really good enough, they have to be eliminated in order to reduce yeast levels in the body. Even fruits and milk sometimes have to be also because of the natural sugar, though some get away with having limited amounts.
Are you using Andy's protocol for chelation? I think his is the safest around.

Thanks for the information. I have limited my sugar intake but I haven't done all of the things that you suggested. I am using Cutler's detox protocol now. Three days of DMSA/ALA was very hard on me. Hi, yeah you could try eliminating those things, not just limiting. Not easy of course. But the cravings start to disappear after a while, it's just the initial battle that's hard to go through. But after the body has gotten them out of the system, it can help it concentrate easier on other things plus can heal and renew itself better. Some find the candida diet alone can almost eliminate their depression and other symptoms. I don't know if I'd go that far, for me it USED to do that and I had my depression almost completely disappear by elminating sugar, yeast and gluten grains, among many other symptoms. I felt like a new person in some ways, but still had mercury poisoning affecting me in other ways.
I wish I could get that improvement nowadays, but I have other issues that are hindering my body from benefitting like it used to.
I'm scared to try ALA at the moment. Many people can only use very small doses of both DMSA and ALA, not the doses suggested by Andy, as they are too high for many of us. Many have to use 25 mg or lower to cope.

I tried Cutler's protocol with 100 mg DMSA capsules and 400 mg ALA capsules. I think that was too much for me and I am close to going over the edge. I feel like I need to be locked up. No wonder you feel like you're losing it. That is the highest dose I've heard of anybody using of ALA.
Tell me, did you use DMSA on it's own for a few months before adding ALA? That is crucial. 100 mg of DMSA is very very high on it's own, but 400 mg of ALA has blown me away.
You should be able to stabilise things again if you knock off the ALA and just take DMSA for a time (maybe at lower doses like 25 - 50 mg).
But don't use ALA until you have reduced your blood/tissue levels of mercury, otherwise you risk moving more mercury INTO the brain by using ALA too early. If you haven't already, you need to use just DMSA alone for about 3 months, then later add ALA. But again, at far lower doses than what you've been using.
Of course, you can get the mercury back out again at some point, but you can see the risks.
alpha lipoic acid causes a lot of symptoms/side effects even at relatively low doses, so no wonder you feel over the edge.
I'd concentrate on DMSA for a while and just use moderate doses of it. Maybe 25 mg or so. If you can handle more of it, ok, but definitely don't add ALA until you're ready and then only very small doses to start out. I would never go over 25 mg of ALA, until I was certain I could cope.
You may know all this already and have already done it. And if you have, I'd still go back to DMSA for a while to try and bring things a little back into balance. Adjust the doses down to tolerance.
Your symptoms should start to abate at some point, but you will really feel very unstable for a while. That would flatten anybody!
Hope you improve soon.

I'll slow things down quite a bit. I've already taken 20 DMPS infusions so I wonder if I will ever "run dry" on mercury. I know that Cutler says that it can take 2-3 years to recover from a severe case of chronic poisoning and that's probably what I have. Tomorrow I will turn 43 and I have no wife, no children, no siblings, and parents that are pushing 70. What is left to live for? Surely God has tested my faith farther than what I thought was imaginable. No wonder you feel like you're losing it. That is the highest dose I've heard of anybody using of ALA.

Hi Aaron, you echoed my own situation almost perfectly. I have the same worries and pain.
faith in God is pushed to the brink and sometimes basically over it. How does one keep going? WEll, I don't know, I just keep living for some reason.
I'm turning 34 this year and I hate every minute of it in all honestly. It's awful because you feel stuck in a situation that you can't control or seem to change. I have tried for many years now and I really am not healing and have no clue as to why. I feel frantic and often bewildered by it all. Sound familiar? I just hope you have better luck with getting over this amalgam illness. I think for me it's complicated by other matters that is interferring or hindering my immune system.
Hope you feel a little less isolated in this. But I know, it doesn't make things better. I certainly do have the same feeling of futility! Hard to keep going.
But at any rate -
HAPPY BIRTHDAY REGARDLESS OF THE SITUATIONAL sh*t <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
and definitely take the chelation slower and easier, too easy to push yourself further than you can handle).

Aaron, Happy birthday for tomorrow! im sure if you take Bex's advice you will feel a whole lot better for it. 43 isnt old either, your bound to meet someone, you have plenty of time. I find it hard being in a relationship while going through this .

You have some good advice going on here Aaron, take it slow, you have lots of time left...I am 55 and feel so blessed that I still have time to live out some of my dreams without being sabotaged by my "Mercury moments" They were so debilitating...but at least we know and can start to deal with it...knowledge truly is power. I think you will feel better as Bex says to get the metals from your tissues first and work with the ALA later...that stuff can be very dangerous.
I also have lost my home and many of my friends and family over this illness, the expense and the isolation of this disease has made me want to give up many times, but those were my worst mercury moments. Eat a good diet, sugar and yeast will methylate more mercury into your brain....just doing the candida diet will help move mercury out and make you feel like a million bucks. The diet can be challenging but it makes me feel in control of my life and I look and feel 20 years younger. You should see my before and after photos....you wouldn't know I was the same person.
Best luck and happy b'day tomorrow, you have lots of good living to do!!!!
Sandi xoxo
