I have crown made this way and cannot find any info as to what type of metal is used, etc. Anyone know? I guess it depends where it comes from but I'm just curious. More metal in the mouth, lovely.

Hi Ziggen, I just found this: http://onibasu.com/archives/am/2014.htmlSomebody's question re PorcelainI'm wondering if I should have gone with a composite, instead of porcelain, which contains aluminum. I feel pretty good with this acrylic in my mouth. What do you think? Andy Cutler's responseI think the aluminum in the porcelain is in an extremely insoluble form. You will get a lot more aluminum from the baking powder in stuff you buy at the store and restaurants than you will ever get out of that crown.
Porcelain crowns are usually over a stainless steel base, which may be more problematic.
Put it in and see what happens - if he has already ordered the crown then you will get to pay for it regardless, so you might as well try it and see whether you want to replace it later. Most people tolerate regular (porcelain) crowns fine, a small minority don't.
Andy Cutler If you are concerned, can you get it replaced with something like cerec porcelain? Which does not have a metal base to it? Can you find out from a biologic metal free dentist what options there maybe if you are concerned about any existing metal in your mouth? Although it may not be like an amalgam, where it contains toxic elements like mercury/copper which leach out and build up, it may still cause some issues if you find you're quite reactive to metals. I'm not sure if I'd feel comfortable with having a direct metal in my mouth. Then again, I'm very reactive to metals anyway. Not everybody is. It will cause issues if there is a mix of metals in the same mouth, creating a battery type response (galvanic reactions). E.g. a mix of amalgams and braces. A mix of gold and amalgam etc. But really, your best bet would be to talk to a biologic metal free dentist and ask him/her about this and whether it is cause for concern.
