Mind Tickler ~~~~ Jenny is saving up for a new soccer ball. Her piggy bank contains $3.75 (three dollars and seventy five cents)-- in pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. There are more quarters than dimes, more dimes than nickels, and more nickels than pennies. How many pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters are there? ________________________________________________________ Bex, Denis, BScot, Lynn, CTD , anyone ? Thanks for the fun and friendship. HMMMMM... , I wonder how this will work out since some of you are from other Countries and the currency is different? Let's try.... Have a great weekend. Abishag <><

Answer: 10 quarters, 9 dimes, 6 nickels, and 5 pennies
How I got the solution:
If you have more than 0 pennies, you need at least 5 of them in order to end up with a multiple of 5 in your total. That means you need at least 6 nickels (you have more nickels than pennies) and at least 7 dimes (you have more dimes than nickels). That means you get a minimum of 1.05 in dimes nickels and pennies. So the maximum number of quarters you can have is 10 otherwise you would end up with more than 3.75.
Let's start with 10 quarters, 7 dimes, 6 nickels and 5 pennies: you get 3.55
You still need to add 20 cents somewhere without breaking the rules.
The only way to add 20 cents without breaking one of the rules is by adding 2 dimes. So you end up with 10 quarters, 9 dimes, 6 nickels, and 5 pennies as your answer.
If you try with 9 quarters, you can't find a solution that doesn't break the rules so the above answer is unique.

WOW! That is exactly right, Denis! Thank you for the participation. Did it take you long to figure it , or was it just automatic? Some people really have a knack for mathematical equations, etc. At any rate, you are 100% RIGHT ON! Now, please take care and know that you are a wonderful man and the LORD JESUS LOVES you so much. (John 3:16) Blessings my friend, Abishag <><

Blessings to all who tried to work this. And an extra special 'Word' for those who can read this: "Car Dieu a tant aime' le monde qu'il a donne' son Fils unique, afin que quiconque croit en lui ne pe'risse point, mais qu'il ait la vie e'ternelle." Forgive me that I do not know how to put the 'slash' over the required letter for (4 words). The Lord will tell you what it reads. Blessings, Abishag <>< JESUS IS LORD!

Did it take you long to figure it , or was it just automatic? Some people really have a knack for mathematical equations Hi Abishag, It took me about 20 minutes. I tried a few different approaches that went nowhere before I tried solving in the manner I posted above. When you have inequalities, you can sometimes "box in" your problem into a small number of possible answers. Thanks for the puzzle.. It was fun working with this one. Also thanks for the special 'Word' in French. Denis
