I found this quote online and was wondering if this means that flaxseed oil contains ALA and is used as a chelator? I take a teaspoon every day but I was not aware that this can 'stir up' mercury as I was avoiding taking ALA supplements as I heard some people have bad reactions. Should I continue with the flaxseed oil? I'm a bit confused on what it does when taken alone..
Walnut Oil, Hempseed Oil, Flaxseed, and flaxseed oil are rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA),which is an essential fatty acid that will help the body chelate mercury and other metals. ALA's are omega-3 fatty acids. ALA appears to be a chelator that is less harsh on the kidneys and from my research I have found to be a great addition to a mercury/aluminum/lead chelation. I think one could get higher doses for chelation in a supplement form without causing liver damage. For less severe chelation needs, ALA's in walnut oil and flaxseed oil could be helpful for chelating in combination with cilantro and chlorella(30 minutes before taking cilantro

Nina, I doubt very very much that flax seed has any connection whatsoever to alpha lipoic acid. The initials just happen to be the same. Andy Cutler highly recommends flax seed oil for mercury toxic people and believe me, he is so big on not using ALA for any purpose other than proper chelation that he would never tell us to use flax oil if it had any connection to alpha lipoic acid. One has absolutely nothing to do with the other.

Nina, Sorry I couldn't respond to your question sooner: I found this quote online and was wondering if this means that flaxseed oil contains ALA and is used as a chelator?

Flax seed oil does contain ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), but this is not the same as ALA (alpha lipoic acid). Alpha lipoic acid is the substance that expels mercury from the tissues and is commonly used for mercury detox. I think whoever posted the above quote was mixing up the two different ALAs. Flaxseed oil is very beneficial and in all the research I've done, I've never found anything to suggest that it expels mercury from the tissues or would be used for mercury detoxing. Here's a link to detailed information sheets on both Flax Seed Oil and Alpha Lipoic Acid to help resolve any confusion you might have.
