I used to try to improve only SWS and never concerned about REM. Lately I would wake up at 3, 4 even 5am feeling very good only to go back to sleep for an hour or more and feel awful when I woke to get out of bed. I decided to look into improving REM sleep.
Acetylcholine is supposed to enhance REM, specifically anything that agonises the Muscarinic receptor will enhance REM. We can thank our friends in the "Lucid Dreaming" world for experimenting in this area.
I read a post where the author recommended taking a pro-acetylcholine supplement just before the last stage of rem (somewhere like 6-7 hours into sleep). He used Huperzine-A.
I happen to have some (and 100+ other supps) so I tried. I had already had one incredible night when I first got the Huperzine months ago but could not reproduce the success.
Anyway it is helping me. I'm taking Phosphatidyl-Choline in the morning usually then when I usually wake up at 3-4 am I take the Huperzine. I am remembering more dreams and they are more normal. Sleep is more normal and my overall feeling of well being has increased.
It's worth a try if you don't remember dreams or feel that your REM isn't refreshing. B6-zinc will also help this. Other sources of Choline are Choline bitartrate and DMAE.
You might google for: REM Acetylcholine "Lucid dream"
"Lucid Dreams" are amazing if you've never had one. If your waking life has to be hell your sleeping live could be absolutely incredible.
Cheers
