I know what you mean CTD! There are more than enough areas on this forum for people to set up chats together, private messages, emails, shout box, or other forums more related to what they want to discuss.

Can I ask here... how do I get my avatar to fit better? I set it to 80x80 pixels but it still looks a bit stretched or something. Any help?

Thanks!

Welcome to the fray, Mordred.

If you only set the height to 80 pixels i believe the width will adjust automatically to be the right proportion

Enjoy.

Hi RAZD. Thanks for the help.

I tried editing it to 80 using Paint but it just lopped more than half the picture off. What's the best program to adjust the size with? I don't know why for the life of me I can't figure this out.

By the by, what do the stars next to people's names mean? Is it related to the number of posts you've made - because I seem to be the only one who doesn't have any at all!

A photo editor will allow you to change the size. I use Irfanview because it is free.

The stars are an evaluation system. It is a basically a popularity vote. Since this forum is mostly Young Earth Creationist (YEC), the more you debate for the YEC side, the more stars you will get.

Thanks, Linear. I'll give that a try.

As for the stars. I don't even know what Young Earth Creationist means so no stars for me I guess frown

Young Earth Creationist:

Believes that the account in Genesis is literal history.

1. The universe was created in 6-days.
2. The universe was created approximately 6000 years ago because all the lifespans of the patriarchs along with the age they were when their sons were born plus the time frames of particular events in relation to the Birth of Christ, calculate out to 6000 years with a minimal margin of error.
3. The Noachian Flood occurred exactly as stated in the Bible approximately 4000 years ago (from those patriarch's ages again!!).
4. If you don't believe these things then you can't possibly believe that Jesus is not a liar since He referred to these events in a tangential sort of way.
5. Also if you don't believe these things then you are calling God a liar since He wrote the Bible.

I can't believe you haven't heard of this...it was in all the papers! grin

I've heard the term Creationist, yes. I saw some recent TV sitcoms (namely Weeds and Big Bang Theory - both of which are hysterical by the way!) where they seem to repeatedly touch on the idea that some people want creationism (the idea of an intelligent designer being responsible for the universe) taught in schools either in favor of or alongside evolution. Evidently this is a big deal in the States and my departure from home in the past three years has absented me from all this, heh.

I also know that some people are against the idea of evolution and have skimmed through enough posts here to get the gist of both sides.

But I've never heard of the Young Earth aspect of Creationism. I also didn't know the bible says the Earth is only 6,000 years old. How is this figure determined exactly since there isn't a passage which says word for word how old the planet is? I mean what is said about the lifespans of these patriarchs for anyone to conclude what you've said? Link me, please? smile

Anyway, not that it has anything to do with anything (this is a suitable derail thread though!) but I highly recommend you check out Weeds and Big Bang Theory (which has nothing to do with evolution or the Big Bang Theory, it's just about some nerdy geek types).

Props to CTD for making this thread incidentally smile

I got a few for helping people on the mercury forum until some creationists here got narked. But no, I've never understood the stars myself, but I know how you can get some here: ignore evidence, insult posters rather than address their claims, say "That's not true because I say it isn't," display a lack of scientific knowledge, make up funny terms for evolutionists and the evidence they use, claim that we can't know what happened in the past because we weren't there, claim that scientists are in an evil conspiracy to deceive, claim that fossils in faunal succession is just a huge coincidence, claim that the Bible is literally true so any evidence to the contrary is lies . . . well, there's a few suggestions for you anyway.

The politest explanation is that it is just a popularity contest, and if you don't raise questions that make people uncomfortable that you may get some. I find them pretty worthless in being able to judge whether the post is accurate or valid, but I'll let you be the judge of how valuable you think they are. To me they just represent the logical fallacy of popularity, in spades ... er, stars ...

Enjoy

RAZD, the politest response to your post is:

You can't rate more than once on this forum! Now with that, PLUS the fact evolutionsts pretty much outdo creationists in number on here and have done for sometime....you haven't got much to work with using the "popularity excuse".

There's how many of us? 3-4 ? ....pretty darn insignificant. So, perhaps some spies got on here to rate.... Or some other top secret explanation....Whatever it is, 3-4 creationists would not have this much impact on the final "score" (stars).

Give people reading this stuff a bit more credit RAZD, perhaps the majority out there don't all quite agree with the "evidences" you've posted.....who knows?

However, I think the popularity contest is probably going a bit too far. No contest, more evos on here than creationists. And don't tell me you guys haven't rated eachother! I won't believe you smile

Nice try!

Well hello yourself smile Glad somebody recognized my chosen name. I was going to opt for Corwin (a la Roger Zelazny's Amber) but I had an inkling nobody would catch it.

Thanks for the tips regarding avatars btw. I'm looking into it now. The image still looks a little off but maybe that's as good as it can get in such a small box.

Regarding popularity contests and such. I guess the idea of a star system based off people rating your personality does seem a little juvenile (no offense forum moderators, please don't hurt me! wink ) I was convinced it meant how prolific of a poster you are - you know, number of posts. How come people have either only 1 star or 5 and nothing in between? Except for me with 0 and I know the reason for that.

I agree with you here. Maybe the whole voting system is unnecessary? Could we all sign a petition to do away with it? Maybe I'm still too new to start telling people where to put their furniture though laugh

Your forgetting something, Bex

Then you 3 to 4 could only have 2-3 stars ...

The fact is that the number of posters does not equal the number of people reading and rating.

Quote
And don't tell me you guys haven't rated eachother! I won't believe you
Well then there is no point in telling you, is there - you've made up your mind regardless of evidence.

Quote

Many people don't like evidence that makes them feel uncomfortable.

There is a law of unintended consequences that says when you want a system to rate the value of a post you will end up with the posts having the least value getting rated highest. Look at who we choose for president if you think this is just meant to be funny.

I've said before, I don't want any stars. Not one.

Enjoy.

Yes, of course.

On another board they have a "Post of the Month" where you nominate posts that you think are good, and it is the quality of the post and not who posted it that is rewarded.

I am not here to win a popularity contest by catering to the comfort of others. If ikester, for example, wants to go on a rampage because the evidence proved he was wrong, and people want to blame me because I posted the evidence, then I cannot take their unhappyness as evidence of anything but being unhappy with reality.

Enjoy.

CTD, What kind of music did The Mountain play? Sounds like it might've been bluegrass?? I've seen Vince Gill live several times cause we use to get free tickets when the hubby hooked back up with the drummer, an old friend, and it was ear candy. Now Billy is remarried and not touring with him as much. We saw him last when he was here with The Little River Band. John would've been touring with them if he wasn't still active duty! That was nice, too!! I love the Allison Krause/Robert Plant album. Unique collaboration but it works!! Where'd you hear K-SHE?? So are you from OH?

I don't go see a whole lot of haz-been acts unless we know someone, but I don't think Paul Rogers is one. He's only gotten better...and he does act his age, too. He has one CD called NOW with songs that aren't from his glory days and they're beautiful - about his kids, wife, etc.

I subbed yesterday and saw one of the kids I'd had last year who became like a son. He is a pot smoker... His dad is in jail for something related so this kid doesn't stand much of a chance. He flunked some classes last year. Anyway - he was so proud to come up and tell me he'd gotten 100's the past 7 grades he'd gotten.... Goes to show love goes a long way!!!! It made me so happy : )

Blessed Be: A common phrase, used among Pagans as a greeting, a letter closing, or a statement of agreement. "Bright Blessings" appears in similar context. Although both phrases come from Wicca/Witchcraft they have spread into general use.

Hello CTD, fyi

Actually we are told in Holy Scriptures, "....be like minded one toward another according to Christ Jesus." Rom 15:5

"Fulfill ye my joy that ye be like minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind." Phil 2:2

The Psalmist penned "Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time forth and for evermore." Psm 113:2

2 Corinthians 11:14 "And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light."

Yes, Satan has been twisting God's Word- up and down, left and right for over 2,000 years....just as he did when he was in the garden of Eden...to Eve, .."Hath God said.....?"

He also used Holy Scriptures trying to tempt our beloved Lord Jesus in the Gospels, Matthew Chapter 4 'Temptation of Christ'.

I am making this post primarily because, not unlike you, I am a creationist. I don't believe that this post should even be here, frankly.

Why? Because in my eyes, 'it gives place to the devil'.

Witchcraft is an abomination to the Lord...as you know.

We should be striving to keep the Lord's word HOLY, PURE, and BLAMELESS.

....enough said. I will say, as always, Blessings,
Abishag <><

Well, I'll think on it. The phrase used to be here several places, as a signature.

In the context of providing information, I don't think it's really giving place. It's rather unavoidable to mention a thing if one is going to discuss it.
