Very interesting! http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/picrender.fcgi?artid=2098763&blobtype=pdf"It is previously reported that mercury is stored in the pituitary of dental personnel [49]. In the present study signif- icant correlations between number of surfaces filled with amalgam and mercury concentrations in pituitary and thyroid. Probably, mercury is stored together with selenium in these tissues, resulting in very long biological half times [54]."

"A small fraction of MeHg in the brain demethylates to inorganic mercury, which is retained for very long times, especially in pituitary and thalamus [33], probably mainly due to association with selenium to highly insoluble mercury selenide" I'm not sure what to make of this. There is a lot of mention of Selenium being bound to mercury making the mercury hang around for a LONG time. If this telling us that supplementing Selenium is a bad idea? The link to the article I posted ( http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0ISW/is_2001_May/ai_73959332/print) Selenium is an essential trace element, which is vital to the activation of GSH- containing, liver detoxification enzymes and also to the antioxidant enzyme, Glutathione peroxidase, important in neutralizing free peroxide radicals and oxidized lipids. Tolerance of selenium may be limited by its binding to, redistribution and precipitation of mercury in the tissues, which may induce nausea, digestive disturbances, vertigo, etc. For those who do not tolerate selenium, use of Vitamin E (Tocopherols and Tocotrienols) to counteract mercury-induced, tissue lipid peroxidation is indicated. Vitamin E works with selenium to neutralize mercury. Notice how it mention "binding to, redistribution and precipitation of mercury" ab out Selenium. It looks like you should always supplement Vitamin E when taking selenium.

I can't figure out, if dmsa alone does not cross the bbb, why we get brain symptoms without using ala. Symptoms like weird dreams, muscle spasms, mood issues, etc. Mark

Hi, it may depend on how you are using the DMSA - whether it's causing too much redistribution of metals or not.
Plus I remember reading that mental symptoms do not always mean "brain mercury" but can also be related to mercury elsewhere in the body (liver for example).
And body symptoms can also be from brain mercury! So it's very difficult to know exactly where it's coming from as one thing is attached to something else.
Andy talks about Brain V body symptoms somewhere and it was quite surprising.
I remember the time I released a ton of metals from antifungal use and I wound up a complete mess with muscle tics (spasms), weird dreams, night sweats, tremors, the lot. I had to chelate it back out with DMSA and often during chelation my symptoms would worsen and I'd start crying, but usually there was some kind of relief after the detox was over.
I don't think redistribution can be completely prevented, but it can be lessened, depending on how the protocol works. DMSA apparently does not cross the blood brain barrier to any clinincal degree (unlike ALA or even Cilantro).
The study they did to say it DID cross the BBB, was done on rats apparently, which have a different and much more permeable brain barrier than humans....so though the DMSA may have gone over in them, it's not quite the same in humans.
You can get weird dreams, muscle spasms and lots of other horrible things just from mercury poisoning your other organs (not just the brain).
