Why do we become shy/loners/reclusive/hermits/non-trusting?

"Part of the reason for depression is related to mercury's effect of reducing the development of posterior pituitary hormone (oxytocin)."

Trust via chemistry? Study says it's possible
By Dan Vergano, USA TODAY
Better deception through chemistry may be making its way to a nose near you, reports a team of neurochemists.
Oxytocin, a hormone used to stimulate contractions during labor, also appears to be a trust-builder when inhaled, says the team led by Michael Kosfeld of Switzerland's University of Zurich. The report on the hormone, known in its synthetic form as Pitocin, appears in Thursday's journal Nature.

"Oxytocin seems to reduce anxiety about interacting with strangers," says study co-author Paul Zak, director of the Center for Neuroeconomic Studies at Claremont Graduate University in California. "But it's not some sort of evil mind-control drug — spraying it in the environment won't affect anybody."

Knowing from earlier research that oxytocin plays a role in brain regions associated with emotion and behavior, the scientists played a "trust game" with 29 volunteers. The game allowed players to invest a sum of money with a trustee, who received triple that amount and then could choose to return none, some or all of the total to the player.

Inhaling oxytocin made participants 17% more likely to trust someone else with real money, the researchers found. Replacing the trustee with a computer issuing random payoffs dropped the volunteers' investment rate back to normal, suggesting to the scientists that trust, not risk-taking, is the emotional factor influenced by the hormone.

"The authors' results open up possibilities for investigating conditions in which trust is either diminished, as in autism, or augmented," says neurologist Antonio Damasio of the University of Iowa College of Medicine in a commentary accompanying the report. Some people with brain injuries and children with a genetic disorder display excessive trust of strangers, he notes, which may result from too much oxytocin. The researchers also suggest that extremely shy people could benefit from a dose.

Generated mostly in the brain, oxytocin plays a role in maternal behavior in mammals, such as nursing infants and in the overcoming of natural inhibitions against allowing others to approach. Kosfeld's team last year found that the brain secretes the hormone when trust pays off in similar game experiments.

In his commentary, Damasio worries that "political operators will generously spray the crowd with oxytocin at rallies." Others disagree. "Fear not," says sociologist Amitai Etzioni of George Washington (D.C.) University in an e-mail to USA TODAY. Etzioni has written extensively on trust's role in society.

"A chemical may move us over a bit in one direction or another," he says. "But the notion that it will make us trust someone we otherwise would not is way beyond what the study shows or can be expected."

Thanks for sharing this Rick, it sure makes sense...that is why I often feel detached from everything....I always wondered why I felt so cold and emotionless at times....and at other times like an emotional moron.....

The first site you have listed has some very interesting info about the relationship to glandular function and mercury...scary stuff!!! It just rips my heart out to think what mercury has done to my children in utero. I hope at least some of it is reversible.

Thanks again,
Sandi

Hi Sandi !

Yea that first link has a lot of good additional info. I highly recommend reading the rest of that site.

I know that I promised you information on oxytocin, Sandi... I never found the hard copy article so I thought I'd post this for you and others here.

Knowing that there's a scientific and physical reason for why people form negative traits is a huge part of fixing the problem, and I do think a lot if not most of the harm of mercury is reversable. Mercury can mold a personality, but awareness itself can enable one to see that he/she can change. I believe will is more powerful than mercury. I also believe we have the power to change our brains and personalities and make up for lost time.

The people on this site have the opportunity to pass this knowledge down to their own children to ensure that they do't suffer the same insults. I bet your kids are living a better life, Sandi, because of your persistence in identifying and fighting your own mercury issues. Most mercury sufferers don't even know what they are suffering from... and it gets passed down to their kids... which is why it has been accepted in society for the past 150 years. That's a tough mold to crack!

I did a search and found this post. The link has some good information on how mercury effects the endocrine system. I know mercury in my pituitary is the cause of all of my symptoms and this just strengthens my conviction.

oxycalm has this in it...its a nasal spray and im thinking of trying it.

Worried though if I have to rely on it all the time or get a tolerance and need to up the dose to feel better or if I stop I would get withdrawals and need it.

I used to wonder why I was on the shy side and standoffish towards people ,even before amalgam removal ,like russ had mentioned in his story that mercury can cause many emotional imbalances ,I know that being just 2 months post removal I have noticed a difference ,my shyness is not as bad as before and am much more calm around different people ,thanks for the post

Absolutely, but for me it was not just emotional imbalances. It changes your personality. Of course, people don't know this until after they've had amalgam removal and detox because they have no alternative to compare their personality against.

I've gotten to the point where I can predict with pretty good certainty if someone has a mouth full of amalgams simply in the way they act. It manifests itself a little differently from person to person, but certain sets of personality attributes are generally grouped together, and this is the key.

For example: Some have aggression with sarcasm without considering the depth of a subject. Others have shyness with a "pre-apologetic" personality. Others become perverse, in that they have sudden outbursts, somewhat like ADD. These are only a few groupings I've noticed but they always seem to cluster in the type of traits that are seen together.

In my own life, these personality changes have made the difference between success and failure. It's a complete turnaround and I believe as more people have their amalgams removed, more will discover just how intimately they've been harmed in all areas of their life, not just physically.

ha, I think I've fit the profile of all three of those at different points in my life. I used to be more the shy type but lately I've become more angry and likely to lash out at people, usually strangers. Though I'm still shy. I hope you are right about mercury having such a dramatic difference in behavior. I find myself doing things that I consider very much "out of character". Driving for example, I've become a road rage maniac, impulsively flipping the finger every chance I get. This makes no sense, anyone who knows me can tell you that's not my personality at all. One of these days I'm going to get myself in serious trouble...

I like the word "disconnected" to describe being mercury intoxicated. It feels like life isn't even happening; it's just a movie playing across my eyelids. People aren't real, just materialist constructs. Empathy, the real thing not the "intellectualized sort", is hard to come by..

Yeah that sounds like me also. Another thing I have always been like is doing stuff that I found funny that could get me into trouble. At the time, I never think of the consequences. I also get uncontrollable laughing which I cannot seem to control at stuff that isn't all that funny.

I am the same, I get rages and in the car this is not good. also flipping the finger. Like recently I chased down a car when a guy overtook me and yelled at me while his girlfriend drove. So I chased them and pulled them over. Now these two were as rough as guts, that is just not something I would normally do. I was all ready for a full on confrontation. It was luckily settled and did not come to that, but honestly one moment I'm passive and wont do anything, or I go the other way.

It does not feel like I am me sometimes. So yeah all these traits could easily be applied to myself and for most of my life. But mainly I'm withdrawn, antisocial, afraid of going anywhere and I just tend to stay in my room. No motivation or much feeling.

Yes disconnected is a very good way to describe it, I have felt like that most all of my life. I always felt like I was watching my life from outside my body....I thought I was nuts at times, I guess I kind of was. Much better now, but I still feel disconnected at times, but at least I know what it is now.

I have the rage too Bex, the road rage just comes out of nowhere, I am better if I meditate or do yoga, deep breathing helps to ground me.

Hi Sandi, yeah the word is disconnected. me also. I dont have much feelings. It's frustrating to not feel things, other than darkness/depression. When I laugh, I still dont really feel joy or happiness. Quite odd.

Haven't tried yoga really, but have tried deep breathing. I know I get much worse when I cheat on my diet, no doubt about that.

Mercury affects everyone differently, but it definitely affects everyone. They may not know it, but the changes in their personality, energy levels, and other attributes are not be visible because they don't have the ability to compare their currently attributes to the way they would be if they had no mercury exposure.

Also, damage occurs in everyone to some degree, no matter how little you seem to be reacting to the mercury. It's just chemistry.

The people who don't seem to be having such reactions may also have different APO-E Genotypes. They may excrete mercury more efficiently.

Hope this helps.

I think the only people who even bother looking into mercury are those who are so badly poisoned, and so miserable that everything else has failed to make life bearable. So they turn to something "fringe" like mercury poisoning out of desperation. Everyone else just accepts how they are cause they manage to get by alright and don't want the hassle of amalgam removal, chelation, etc. Well they probably aren't even thinking of those things, just the idea that there are toxins shooting out of their teeth is something they just don't want to wrap their heads around! So they write us off as "fringe" or "loonies" to make themselves feel better...

What's really strange I've noticed, is how people will accept the negative aspects of their personalities as "who they are", and stop seeing them as "bad". Thus they will be resistant to the idea they are mercury intoxicated. Could be one reason they get so defensive when people talk about amalgam illness. They see the idea as an attack on their personality! You see, we are supposed to feel crappy and miserable all the time, it's just who we are! Who are you to think that you should feel "good"? What, do you think you are better than everyone else?

It'd be almost comical if their wasn't so much real, pointless suffering induced from these additudes. Especially when people start projecting the politically correct axiom that we need to "accept and tolerate" everything about everyone, no matter how messed up. You see a lot of this in the autism community, but that's like viewing it under a microscope. It exists on a lesser scale throughout our entire society. It's pc'ism taken too far and it drives me insane.

I'm reminded of Russ's recent post about how he thinks mercury has infiltrated our culture on a very deep level. That struck a chord with me cause through the lens of mercury toxicity, the world makes a lot of sense, where as before it didn't. Kids 5 younger than me (I'm 24) seem really messed up compared to kids my age (shorter attention span, more violent, more apathetic, etc). Well that's right about the time we doubled the vaccination schedule. You think you can blame the rise in ADHD on "better diagnostics" and "faster media" alone? I don't.

And why are boys so much more worse off than girls in school that every six months a major news magazine posts a cover story on the "boy crisis"? Could it be that testosterone increases the neurotoxicity of mercury? This seems especially true with smaller exposure, which would explain why the 'lesser' potentially mercury induced disorders such as asperger's and adhd have a much higher male-female ratio than more serious cases like autism, minimata or pink's disease; though autism is still skewered towards boys, 4-1.

Other than vaccines, I think the introduction of the high copper amalgams in the 70's has had a big effect on children born in the 80's, as their parents were probably wearing them. Anyone whose read Huggins "It's All in Your Head" knows these new amalgams emit far more mercury than the old ones, and mercury via amalgams passes the placenta and hits the fetus at a very vulnerable time. I don't know how this compares to exposure via vaccinations but it seems to get much less attention, despite seeming like it could be as bad.
