Hi Jill, yep, EDTA is some kind of chelating agent, but it is apparently not advised for mercury toxicity. I think it is a weak chelator, but can make a person worse.
This might be why you're having some problems, hard to say though. Is the hair product you use shampoo? Or is it something that remains in the hair all day?
I'd stop using it. Not sure when the effects will die down, could be a couple of weeks or so....I'm guessing however. I'm just basing that on things that happen to me.
If it's not too serious usually it dies down within a week or two.

Hi Jill, you're welcome. I thought at first it might be shampoo and I couldn't figure out how that would be much of an issue, but the hair gel sounds more like it and the fact you're having these reactions is evident enough.
I hope you start feeling better soon. Interesting though, the fact that the EDTA from the gel sounds like it was being absorbed and stirring up metals or something.
Yikes, I'm going to be careful what I put in my hair (I used hair spray). However, I think it's fine.

Hey guys, I've also read that mercury is not good for chelating mercury, but now I don't know if that is the case. It will likely depend on what form of EDTA is being used. I'm pasting below part of another post about EDTA that I wrote a little while ago, with an article discussing why EDTA has gotten such a bad rap. Not sure if the article is totally accurate, but I knonw my doctor swears by EDTA as a great mercury chelator. ~TIa ******************************************************************* Hey guys, I just did some more research on this.... I did find a couple of articles/statements explaining why Calcium EDTA is supposedly a good chelator for mercury, and why it has been wrongly pegged as not being able to chelate mercury....Part of the article is below. (Both articles I read seem to be linked with these suppository products though....and whenever anything is linked to a product, I view it with caution). What do you guys think? ~Tia ***************************************** http://www.chelationtherapyonline.com/articles/p42.htm#mercury The Mercury Detox Results From Aruba Aruba -- Dr. Carlos Viana, OMD, Viana Natural Healing Center, Kibaima, Aruba, on Oct. 3 sent the following letter to World Health Products: We purchased Detoxamin to try on our patients. As a member of The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, we are always looking for safer methods to detoxify heavy metals. Many physicians do not realize that EDTA is a method for reducing somatic mercury. Many physicians are looking at the heavy metals excreted by the kidneys through EDTA IV chelation and do not find mercury being excreted in the urine. These physicians then wrongly assume that EDTA is not a good chelator of mercury. In fact, EDTA has a greater affinity for mercury than copper, lead, zinc, in that order. The excretion route of mercury is though the large intestine. Traditionally, to detoxify mercury many physicians will use DMSA because it is an oral drug. Therefore, it was logical to look for the mercury in feces because that drug was working through the gastrointestinal (G.I.) tract. Very few physicians were looking at chelated heavy metals in feces with a drug that works through the blood/kidney/urine route. Second, of the physicians that did look for mercury in their patients' feces and did not find much excreted mercury, it is probably because they did not check the third bowel movement. After IV EDTA treatment mercury will not present after the next bowel movement, but will present after the third bowel movement. At our clinic we are finding benefits with Detoxamin suppositories over IV EDTA in removing mercury. 1.) Because mercury is going to be found in the large intestines normally, EDTA suppositories will chelate the mercury in the large intestine first. 2.) The EDTA that travels into the blood stream and binds with lead will be excreted through the kidney/urine and EDTA that bines with mercury in the body will travel back to the rectum where it will bind more securely with EDTA that has not crossed into blood. 3.) With Detoxamin we do not have to wait for the third bowel movement! The next day's bowel movement already has a mercury burden. We are very impressed with initial clinic trials of Detoxamin suppositories and are looking forward to extending our chelation use. Please feel free to quote our letter.

I've heard bad reports from it. There are people very angry at Hal Huggins who continually recommended EDTA chelation to patients, some of whom got very very badly ill by it. So I can see there is differing reports.
I don't know what I think. I've not tried it. I think as with anything, depends on the person, their own biochemistry and what works for them.
There is so much contradictions now to do with mercury. chelation, replacement dental materials, that seriously you could go nuts trying to figure it out. (I probably already am).
But, one thing is sure, mercury does need to somehow be stirred up in order to get it into the blood stream to be excreted. The idea is to minimise that so it does not bounce around too much and cause more damage on its way out. So that's the idea of fnding a way of chelating that keeps mercury as tame as possible in movement.
but again, some people seem to be able to do all manner of things, and their body doesn't need too much help to nudge it into excreting mercury. other people just have a terrible time and go bezerk anytime it's stirred up.
I woudl say the stirring up of mercury woudl definitely take a couple of weeks to begin to subside. IF it's bad enough, it could be longer, depending on how much was stirred up and how long it remains in that state, before it gets reabsorbed again. Also, it's hard to tell where it goes once that happens.
mercury is disgusting stuff, it is so hard to detox, yet can cause so much misery not only as it poisons, but as it gets moved around. It's like you feel kind of damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Bex,
Thanks for the info. You are so right with the "damned if you do and damned if you don't"....with health problems like we have, it seems impossible to "win."
I am still regarding EDTA with caution, and if and when my doctor does advise using it, I will find out which kind of EDTA it is that he uses. It's possible that the people who had bad reactions was because they used the form of EDTA that used to be used, and not the kind that this article distinguishes from it. Or maybe they did use the kind this article claims is great and had a bad response....I think you made a good point that different people, with varying body chemistries, will respond differently. So it's hard to say. I wish there was one cure-all method to use, making our lives so much easier, but there isn't. And doing the research, and finding arguments on both sides, can be quite frustrating.
Along the same lines, I also feel like I need to actually spend the money and get some testing done to find out what all is affecting my health and what the extent of each problem is. Because it's so easy for me to find one thing that seems to explain everything, and then find out that it isn't the case. For instance, I spent close to 3 years treating candida, before I realized that mercury was probably the underlying cause and the reason why I couldn't get well, no matter how good I was with the crazy strict diet or natural antifungals. And now that I am looking at the mercury issue, my doctor is having me treat adrenal and thryoid issues first. I should say "support", not treat, as I know I can't fully treat them with the mercury still there. There are so many issues that are interlinked. And from the readings, it does appear that mercury is the root cause of all of them. But I'm trying to remain open, and not assume that the mercury issue is the answer to everything for me. I did that with the candida, and after years of hard work, found out that wasn't the case. And while I do think all of my health issues stem from mercury, I'm just trying to keep in mind that there is a chance that something in addition to that is at play, and not to put all of my hopes and efforts into this one thing. Part of it is to protect myself maybe from getting my hopes up too much, and I guess part of it is realistic. I was so incredibly excited when I first read about candida and was diagnosed, because it explained what I had, and simply by giving me that diagnosis, insinuated that I could get well through treating the candida. And the same thing happened when I finally made the connection to the mercury. Again, I still think it's likely the root of it all...but I don't want to get too hopeful or not look at the whole picture. I think I may be rambling, but I hope I make sense. This isn't even on the topic of the EDTA, but I guess it was on my mind, so I had to wirte it down! Can anyone relate?

Yes Tia, I can totally relate! Everytime some thing has been diagnosed I have celebrated cause I think I am finally going to get better only to find later that there is more to it. However, I have thought about it a lot and think that Mercury (and in my case lead and thallium also) must be the root cause because what causes mercury poisoning ....... Mercury! So I figure if I get rid of that I've got it sorted. Also I firmly believe that having hope helps as it enables me to remain positive and I know I feel worse when I don't have a positive attitude.

JID,
You're right, having hope is necessary. I guess I'm just trying not to get my hopes up TOO much, because I don't want to naively believe that I will be well really soon or that this is the final thing, where once I chelate the mercury, etc I will be fine and well. I really do think it's the root cause of all this, but I'm just being hesitant for now in letting myself attached to the idea that chelation will solve all my health problems. Probably because the mercury has already screwed up so many things in my body, that even once it's out, I will have to treat those other things and get them back on track.
But I am truly excited about building up the other systems in my body (adrenal & thyroid) and then starting chelation sometime around Christmas. I'm just praying that I can finally feel better. Lack of energy and chronic fatigue are my two worst symptoms, and they're starting to drive me insane! I'm in grad school full time, working 20 hours at an internship, and 8 at my job....and I have no energy! Not because I'm doing so much and that leaves me tired, but because I haven't had any in years due to all this health stuff - I start out tired. And I know that it's like that for most people on here, so I'm complaining to the choir!
Thanks for understanding....sometimes that's all I need to help me get through this. I guess it's comforting to know I'm not the only one going through this...
