Dawn, I wholeheartedly recommend trying 5-htp. I can't tell you enough how much it helps for anxiety (I used to have panic attacks) and depression. It's completely natural (plant derived pre-cursor to serotonin) and rarely causes any side effects. I refuse to take any pharmaceutical grade antidepressants (I've tried many and it just seems like playing Russian Roulette). You can take up to 300 mg a day, but you should start with 50mg a day for a week and increase by 50mg per week until you get the desired results. Clinical response occurs in 2-4 weeks. Get a good brand like Natrol. Hope it works for you!!!!

I used to take 5-HTP when my mercury was still in because I had a horrible time sleeping. It took me about 2 hours to get to sleep each night. The problem for me was a "racing mind"; having such active thoughts that I could not stop and therefore could not get to sleep. 5-HTP helped somewhat for a while but it's effects diminished over time as my body seemed to "adjust" to the supplementation. It has worked well for others I know but I never really found anything that completely solved my racing mind except to remove my amalgams.

Dawn, You can find Natrol products at pretty much any regular ol' drugstore (Walgreens, CVS, Osco). If not there, try like Hi Health or a vitamin shop.

After many years of expiencing depression on and off because of mercury I went on Effexor, an antidepressant, a month ago.
It actually worked well, but my MD wants me to change to Zoloft.
For sleep, I use 3-4 grams of tryptophan, along with something like torazepam each nite. The tryptophan gets me to sleep, and the other keeps me asleep. I experience extreme insomnia when symptomatic.

Thanks for the replies, i took 100gms 5htp, yesterday and i had to take a sleeping pill from the doctor as i only sleep 3 or 4 hrs a night and when dealing with this depression and anxiety i really need more sleep. Im trying my hardest to stay of antidepressants which my doc wants to give me, as when i have mercury symptoms im crying all the time and cant function normally. Its only been 3 weeks since my fillings were replaced. Im finding it hard to be a mum. Dawn.

I hope you can find relief. Did you have the same anxiety and crying before your fillings were removed 3 weeks ago? or did it get worse after your fillings were removed? I'm having mine removed and need to be a mom also and want to be prepared...Thanks.

L-taurine and GABA is supposed to help for anxiety and depression. Especially if you are suffering from the racing mind type of anxiety and panick attacks. I think with natural stuff you also need a few weeks to find the perfect dose, and might experience some side-effects before adjusting. This is also what happens with the medicine anti-depressants, they say it takes a few weeks to find the correct dose and not to give up if symptoms worsen cause it could be temporarily.....

I got 3 teeth filled with mercury in pulled out back in Dec,about a week later i got severly depressed, my doctor put me on prozac, anyway i only stayed on it for 12 days as the side effects were really severe, i also got tinitus while on the tablets and it hasn't gone, i dont know if it s mercury causing it, drugs or having my teeth pulled. I had my other 3 done over the 4 months after that, and i am getting depression and anxiety along with other symptoms. Im am sensetive to everything, i really am trying to look after myself, i dont eat sugar, dairy, gluten, yeast etc, i do enemas, take all the right supps and i still feel terrible. I dont want to put you off, im just telling the truth, im in bed most days, lucky my 2 daughters are 12 and 14 and they dont need me as much. Dawn

Hi Dawn. I'm sorry you're feeling so rough after amalgam removal. I am halfway through, and have stopped for the moment, as my adrenal problems got so bad, in fact everything's got worse, and I have new problems coming, including reactive hypoglycemia. This is despite precautions being taken by the dentist.
I know this is a pet subject of mine, but have you had your thyroid checked? Mercury is known to accumulate in the thyroid gland, making you hypothyroid. Depression and anxiety are major symptoms of hypothyroidism, as are feeling cold, fatigued, having digestive problems. You can be taking all the right supplements and doing the right things, but you may need hormones to feel better! It might be worth googling on hypothyroidism and finding out about T4 / T3 and what tests you need to find out whether you're hypothyroid.
Hope this might help.
Nicola

Hi everyone,
I have never heard of anyone getting better with pharmaceutical drugs!!! I believe that they all have terrible side effects that only tear down the immune system so that you only get worse and need more drugs!!! The Lord designed our bodies to heal itself. But its environmental toxins, most all medications, and most dental materials that prevent the body from being able to function normally to fight off illness. Doesn't this make sense? It doesn't make sense that as sick as we are from toxic dental materials, that it would be wise to poison ourselves any farther with more toxins such as pharmaceutical drugs!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> There are many natural remedies that well help your body heal its self, rather than hurt it. Sorry to be so blunt, but I really believe that medications is more harmful than good, and it makes me sad and mad that so many people don't realize how much damage they can do!!! An excellent health book is, "Prescription for nutritional healing," by James M.D. and Phylss Balch C.N.C. I believe this will help you tremendously!!! Good luck!

I tend to agree with you, Scarlet. I took many of those drugs and in the end I was sicker than when I started taking them. Unfortunately, most people don't have the knowledge or the financial resources to seek alternatives to drug therapy. Hi everyone,

hi dawn, for depression and anxiety 5-HTP has helped me in the past -- but my episodes were periodic so I didn't feel I needed to take it consistently.
Another supplement that helps me during those times in the amino acid L-Theanine. Again, I use it periodically (it's really great for PMS, by the way).
I don't know how these two therapies might interfere with a mercury toxic person. I'm sure Laura and Russ might know more. I tend to get nervous supplementing for any long length of time with just one or two amino acids.
THere's an interesting book out on amino acid supplementation called "The Healing Nutrients Within," by Dr. Marc Braverman. He has written extensively on safe ways to supplement with them.
Another natural remedy for depression and anxiety is SamE. But again, I don't know enough about the mercury toxic interactions. Perhaps it's something you could research.
And while I've never tried it, I've known people who say they have benefitted from Bach's Rescue Remedy for anxiety.
I'm still learning about all the complexities of managing mercury/heavy metal symptoms.
Also, for me, I've really benefitted from adding additional magnesium when I've had anxious days. The extra magnesium also seems to really help with my symptoms such as aching muscles and joints and that overall tight feeling I get in my body.
I hope you start feeling better soon!
