I am new here and have been reading quite a bit. I became very ill after my last dental appt. where I had one very old large filling removed, then replaced, and 2 others filled. I had been going to the dentist for a few months. A day and a half after this last appointment, I lost the use of my muscles in my calves, both legs, knees on down, within seconds. I then went on to get dead tired, thirsty and urinate all the time also.I ended up in a wheelchair, went to mayo clinic, had numerous blood tests, MRI's w/contrast, EMG, saw spine clinic and neuro. They do not know what caused it and claimed I didnt have the sympt. of mercury toxicity. What type of dentist, or dental school would I need to go to, to get these removed? I am at my wits end with no answers. ty

How many amalgams do you still have? What other symptoms do you have besides the paralysis? Do you still have the paralysis? Have you had any fever or below normal temperature?

Are you sure you don't have any systemic infections? what supplements are you taking? Are you getting enough calcium and magnesium? How about sodium, potassium, and water?

I became quite ill from an infection I had in a tooth that needed a root canal.

I didn't count, but I have about 7 amalgams, all in a few months before this happened. Besides the paralysis, I got extremely tired, very thirsty all the time, my skin was real dry, had to urinate way more often larger amounts, got one tiny bump like sore under my tongue, had small red rash on the top of my right wrist, tingling in my feet, numb areas in my legs etc. Oh, and right before this all started, my lower lip started tingling. I have all my records, and it looked like my white count was slightly elevated, but the doc said nothing, didn't tell me what he checked for either. I had only just started taking fish oil before this. I did go get calcium and a one a day. I love salt, so I probably get enough sodium, the potassium I do not know. About my teeth, they were all cleaned months before this, and I was just going and getting fillings done. The last one the assistant wasn't in there all the time and I remember swallowing alot. Same appointment the old large one was taken out and refilled. TY for your reply. BTW, I react to chemicals, and became very sick years ago from a tub surround installed in our bathroom. I was so sick, for 6 months, I had to quit my job, was dead tired all the time, had horrible muscle aches, and got sick around any odors, sprays, plastics, new furniture etc. It took about 2 years for all these symptoms to go away. I noticed i started reacting again to these things also. Thankyou for your help

You had 7 new mercury amalgams installed recently? That is not good. The tingling is likely from a magnesium, b12, or zinc deficiency. Molybdenum supplements(500 mcg or 1,000 mcg a day) can help reduce the chemical sensitivity.

Thankyou for your info. I know now I should not have had all that done but didn't know any better. I wish I had known about this before. I did get my blood tests back. My mercury level is less than 1, they consider normal range less than 10. My magnesium is 2.0, normal range is 1.7 - 2.8 and negative for lyme disease. It looks like I was not tested for B-12 in this one, or zinc, but Mayo may have, I will have to look at those again. Yes I like sweets. I rarely drink.

I speak to a lot of people who have gone through exactly what you have, and let me tell you, I've heard your story over and over, down to your symptom list.

All of the symptoms you mentioned are typical of mercury toxicity.

It's important that, when/if you have them removed, that it is done safely, by a dentist who has been trained in safe mercury removal.

I'm not sure if you saw my story, but you will see similarities between what you are going through and what I went through:

Here are safety precautions that should be taken during amalgam removal:

Thankyou for your information. I have read many stories similar to mine. I am wondering what type of test would show my TRUE mercury level as I know the blood test will not. Also, I am on such a limited income, are there natural dentist schools or what type of dental school could I call to see if I could get in? This was my first question and do not know what type of dental school to call. Thankyou

"I am wondering what type of test would show my TRUE mercury level as I know the blood test will not. "

Nercury accumulates in the brain, liver, kidneys and thyroid. You could get organ biopsies and have mercury levels for each organ calculated from those, however that is not a good idea, and is not recommended.

Some doctors like to do a challenge test which involves measuring mercury excretion, then taking a large dosage of a chelator, and measuring mercury excretion after. Some have become much sicker after doing a challenge test.

Dental schools can be much cheaper than private dentists, however many will refuse to replace amalgams unless they are in bad condition. In NYC for example, NYU dental school charges only around 1/4 of what private dentists charge.

Blood mercury levels are not elevated much from amalgam because the exposure is continuous and cummulative . Your overall mercury level is much higher from the chronic exposure from amalgams than from eating high mercury fish on occasion. Each day you add more mercury to your nervous system , kidneys and other organs and you excrete less than you take in .

I never heard of a holistic dental school but you might be able to go to a dental school and tell them what materials you want to use.

I do not know what my options are then, since a school will not take them out if they are not old or bad. I still have symptoms. Are there any supplements I can take to counteract the mercury or help with the symptoms? I now have pain in my hips, and knees almost every day, and my legs are much better, but still weaker. Thankyou

Don't automatically assume a debtal school won't replace your amalgams. Some might, even if yours aren't in such bad shape.
Be prepared to possibly get a no answer, but perhaps you might be able to talk them into replacing at least some of your amalgams that are in worse condition. It depends on the individual school, and perhaps who examined you, how busy they are(and perhaps also if you are a paying customer rather than on medicare or medecaid?). Judging the condition of your amalgams may also be quite subjective. Perhaps a dental school might be willing to replace some but not all of your amalgams. It is worth a try, especially if they will give you a free or low cost consultation.

Diet - exclude sugar/wheat/gluten/yeast products completely and see if you notice a change in a few weeks. You may notice worsening of symptoms and increased food cravings initially, as die off/detox can take place. Stick it out, it is worth it.

Even this alone can help a whole lot in a person's condition, particularly with mercury/candida/gluten intolerance at work. So often mercury creates the other conditions, which burdens the gut/liver and immunity further.

Supplements can also be of help. Namely antioxidants like vitamin C, E, selenium (selenium apparently works better when taken away from vitamin C, 2 hours apart). Minerals like magnesium, zinc and getting enough iodine (which mercury blocks/depletes). B complex maybe helpful also and essential fatty acids in fish oil (molecularly distilled mercury free one), extra virgin olive oil, butter, etc.

These are just some examples that maybe of extra aid to the diet.

Make sure you get enough protein in eggs and meats, because that is also helpful in those with mercury toxicity, including butter. I also found consuming more raw fruits/vegetables was helpful to me with detoxing! However, fruit can pose a problem if one has a serious enough candida problem (as though healthy, they are still high in natural sugars - fructose, which can still feed a bad yeast problem). I cannot have them these days, but I could have them once. But I could not have sugar/gluten/wheat/yeast and once I excluded those, I had alot of improvement after a few weeks of sticking to it.

That's what I'd personally recommend, at least as a start to what you may add and do later on.
