The "REAL ID Act of 2005" issues ID cards to U.S. citizens and prohibits them from entering federal buildings, boarding airplanes and opening bank accounts until they have met certain security standards established by the law.

This bill was authored by Wisconsin Republican Representative Jim Sensenbrenner:




The Real ID Act was originally H.R. 418, which passed the House and went stagnant. James Sensenbrenner (R) of Wisconsin then attached it as a rider to military spending bill H.R. 1268. The House passed the spending bill along with the Real ID rider, and the Senate passed the joint House-Senate conference report on that bill. President Bush signed it into law on May 11, 2005.

The "Real ID Act" is arguably the most controversial legislation in recent history. It completely disregards individual rights to privacy as it is able to track the position and activities of citizens in a way that is unprecedented. Jim Sensenbrenner claims it is intended to help combat terrorism, but every police department and many public (government) associations in the state of Main (and other states as well) completely disagree.

This act will cost the state of Maine about $185 million initially, not including the additional ongoing administrative and maintenance costs. Maine has led a number of states the U.S. by enacting legislation stopping the "Real ID Act".
