On March 4th, 2008, we had an ice storm. If the day following an ice storm is sunny, it is a photo opportunity that only comes one day every few years. March 5th, 2008 was this one day.

I went tromping around and was able to capture some of the beauty of the New York (state) landscape in my yard in a few miles out of town.

Hope you enjoy them.

This is a picture of my back yard. This white birch tree is struggling to support a fine, glistening coating of ice on its branches.

This is the same tree as in the previous picture. When you add up the weight of that thin coating of ice, you're probably working with 250 to 350 pounds. By the end of the next day, the tree was completely upright again (after the ice had melted off).

This is just a closeup of a bush that grows beside my house. The beauty of the ice is surreal.

This is simply a view into the trees across the street into the neighbor's yard. You cannot appreciate the fact that there were about 10,000 bright, sparkling reflections that the camera cannot properly reproduce.

This is just another closeup of a bush next to my house. I'm a sucker for these shots.

This is just another view into the neighbor's trees, but a little higher than the previous picture. I wanted to get more of the sun's reflection. Again, you cannot capture the full striking scene from this picture.

I was lucky enough to capture this ice cycle hanging off the house while I was standing out in the snow in my shorts and tennis shoes. Wonder what the neighbor's are thinking.

This is a view of the tops of some trees on my yard. The sun was striking coming through the ice coating on the branches.

This is my driveway. It is a virtual ice skating rink in the wintertime.

This is the poor Chevy. At least it's still running.

Laura and I went for a drive and captured this. There were tens-of-thousands of sparkles that you simply cannot see in this photo. It was striking.

Again, I'm a sucker for these types of shots. These are some branches of a tree along side the road.

This is actually a macro shot of some branches on a small tree on the side of the road. It's about 10 minutes before sunset.

Again, just some brush along the side of the road just before sunset.

More road-side shots.

Again, you cannot experience the ten-thousand flashing sparkles. It was a beautiful sight.

Later that night, we went to the Cracker Barrel restaurant in Erie, Pennsylvania. The trees out front were stunning. It's hard to see in this photo however.

Here is a view of the entrance to Cracker Barrel. It was completely surreal if you were able to view it first hand.
